Whats the danger in taking a mk1 round europe?
« on: 13 November 2004, 23:59 »
Thinking of heading down to Italy in my MK1 after I graduate next year.

Has anyone done so, and if so whats to look out for? Quite scared if she were to break down, especially as i dont speak Italian  :-\

Also a bit worried about crime etc... I could see that she might be a bit prone to european pikeys if they saw the chrome,....

any comments/ideas guys?

Rich

What are you talking about Diz? :P

Rich - I changed your profile using the new pic you uploaded :)

Anyway, hmmm, driving to Italy.... def need some good Euro breakdown cover just in case. Guess you could take off the multi million pound wheels if you are worried. Then again, is it easier to rent something new rather than take yours apart before you go?

Sounds like a good trip though :)

I had planned on doing a trip to Italy in mine, to visit a friend working out there. The I found the logistics of getting my Cab over anything larger than a matchstick meant that getting it on or off a ferry was out of the question, and driving on some of the lesser roads, through France or Italy would have resulted in a new sump, petrol tank, silencer, sills, etc etc....
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

On a plus side though - when I was driving through Austria last year, I noticed a lot of mk1 cabs on the road, so finding spares shouldnt be too much of a problem if they are that popular.

speaking from S2N experience its very simple.

1. 5 Star European Breakdown Cover.

2. Make sure everything is good before you go.

So if you know the alternator isn't happy sort it before you go. Make sure the car has excelent cooling as thats a big killer, for instance check your hoses and so forth.

Make sure you aren't leaking/burning oil. And put new oil in a couple of weeks before you leave. Don't drive with manky old oil and try and match what comes out with what goes in as engines, especially older engines like the same type of oil, even if the manual gives something totally different.

If you are leaking - the cost of your trip will be huge, plus the leak can get bigger and then you are screwed. If you are burning, then, choose another car. All sorts of things can go wrong if you are burning.

Generally the cars that didn't make it to Naples on S2N had known problems before they left the UK or engines that made such bad sounds - you wouldn't go to the shop let alone southern Italy in them.

Even if the big ends go - its not that bad. Just shove in the thickest oil you can find, and drive home carefully, never going above 3k. A Toyota had knackered bearings on the first day, still drove 2800 miles. The car killed itself as the owner drove it back up his drive after S2N.

And make sure your exhaust is good.

After that - you should be okay to go. Just take it a bit easy as its an old car and deserves respect.

Have fun.

Tin

added - whatever you do - do not let the car overheat. if it gets hot, take it easy or rest it. if the car overheats then you put extra pressure on the cooling system and something else may break. if it does overheat, rather than sit by the road like a lemon waiting for it to be cool enough to touch, pour cold water across the top of the radiator, this will cool it a lot faster.

and as for security - the mk1 and mk2 are like revolving doors their security is that bad.

what you need is my special patent pending ED209 to stand next to your car.....

Make sure your full beam headlights work, you will need them for flashing slow italians out of the way.

Don't bother with break down cover if it costs more than you car is worth.

Italian roads are a contrast, Autostradas are brilliant, the driving is disciplined and good, you just need to learn the rules.  Towns and Cities are not brilliant, there are no rules.

Seriously though everything Tinman said about the car is spot on.  In europe the motorways are great and very fast, it's nearly impossible to avoid driving fast for long periods of time so the stress on the car is much higher than normal british driving.

Oh, and try to avoid Luxembourg, it's totally pointless.

I resent Luxembourg because we arrived there at 7am on Wednesday morning during the drive home, only to get stuck in a 2 hour traffic jam, and that was just between two junctions!  We finally decided to use some of the skills we learned in Italy and drove down the hard shoulder for 4 miles to the next junction.

Now you mention it I agree about Belgium, although i had totally forgotten it existed!
