FINALY done cambelt at long last !
« on: 24 March 2010, 20:22 »
Finaly decided to do my cambelt at long last on my aum 1.8t ! been putting it off for weeks knowing its a crappy job but decided to get it on a ramp and do it monday eve.
Changed cambelt , tensioner , idle , waterpump , fanbelt , thermostat and new antifreeze . got all the bits via tps for around £140 trade all in .
Lucky i got a pump aswell cos the one fitted was very slightly leaking and on removal had the metalimpeller , but i already new belt and pump had been done at 60k . fitted new pump with the plastic impeller but as said many times they have changed the material in the plastic to avoid same probs !

Was a crap job to do as i know (mechanic for 20yrs now) and after doing a zafira td gearbox monday i didnt really want to do it but new i had to . book time is around 3.5hrs for pump and belt but as per usual you have no hope unless your doing them all the time at dealer or specialised .
That engine mount is an arse to get out and had to leave it in and work round it .All in all took me around 6 hours in total to do the lot and after road test i stuck the modis on and reset throttle body again and checked for any codes .
Drives much better and at last no more temp gauge dropping off when on bypass at 70 and much warmer heater too ! job well done but an arse of one ! no wonder vw down south want nearly £300 + vat labour !!!

Could you do a bit of a guide, got to do mine soon, got a rough idea where i am going with it but don't have a manual (i am a mechanic but on much bigger stuff) i guess it was the left mount you had trouble with, what were the dramas? as i changed mine last year and didn't have any problems.

Or do you have one of those cam belt bibles? if so could you scan the page for mk4 agu for me and email it to me?

im sure the agu are easier as not as much stuff in the way as aum . the top half of the mount comes out easily , its just the mount bracket which bolts to side of block which you need to remove but i coudnt get mine out and just moved it around out the way as i done it !

Good feeling when you do things yourself

I would never do a cambelt though

Believe it or not its very easy to time the engine up its just all the crap you need to remove to get to it ! and the belt is a VERY tight fit to get back on even with the hydralic tensioner de-adjusted and pinned .
I thought the thermostat would be an arse to but that was easy only around 35mins .

no , dont need any of that . if your changing tensioner then just remove hydralic unit gently depres in vice and lock it with a thin allen key . its very akward trying to get that bolt wound in with the camshaft in the way .
