Cold start idle problems

My MK1 GTi doesn't idle at the correct speed when starting up from cold (idles around 900 rpm as if it's warm I guess). Obviously it keeps stalling until warmed up then runs fine.

Is there something simple I can check or is it a 'down to the garage' job for some kind of adjustment?

Cold idle speed is regulated by the air bypass valve on the rear of the inlet manifold. Take the pipes off and give it a good clean inside with carb cleaner, it could be stuck closed so not letting extra air in when the engine is cold. Worth cleaning out the throttle body while your there. The warm up regulator is for fuel enrichment when cold and should not have any effect on the idle speed. Good luck, Steve.

The warm up regulator controls the fuel pressure, correct, but we are talking about control pressure, not system pressure. Not the same thing.

CAn someone give me some tips on how to remove theauxillary air valve. I've just had a look and it's well tucked away. Should I remove it from the engine block (allen key required) before removing the pipes, or try to remove the pipes with the valve in situ?

Ok, Icleaned out the Air Valve. Still got the same problem. How can I test the air valve is working? If it's working, what else could it be?
