flashing oil light
« on: 11 November 2004, 23:13 »
I have an early? 87,8v.When I brake, especially downhill the oil light comes on (no warning buzzer) and then goes off when i rev up slightly. I have checked the oil level and its full.  Any ideas ??
Cheers...Phil

I had this problem about a month ago so I checked the oil,the only thing was the oil was so clean i couldn't really see the level on the stik,so for safetys sake i chucked in bout half a pint.On the following monday i was going to work having a bit of a dabble with my mate in his Celica, next thing at around 70 to 80 in 3rd it felt like i hit the rev limiter ,when i looked at the revs they were at 5000,way below limiter, then i looked in my mirror and all i could see was? a huge cloud of white smoke, the whole carriageway was fogged out. When i got home that nite i realised there was too much oil in the car so i drained about 3/4pint out.It doesn,t blow smoke anymore but the oli light symptom remains.praps i should drain a bit more ??

anyway as for the oil thing mine used to do that but i changed the oil sensor and it has stopped doing it now  must have just been an iffy sensor

Yeah I must admit Marcogolfo i did sh!te my kegs when I looked in the mirror ,my mate in the Celica who was ahead 50 mts also slowed down thinking it was major failiure it was just like when a formula 1 car blows its engine.I have been told that I was lucky I didn't get what they call "Hydraulic lock", apparently this just blows the engine into bits cos' the back end of the piston has nowhere to go but into oil.
Will consider checking the sensor if syptoms persist

Thanks for the info
Cheers

i read somewhere that the oil light thing is a common problem when using light oils, try a heavier/thicker oil might fix the problem. thats if the sensors pump and filters are ok as failing pump or blocked filter can cause drop in pressure.

might be an idea to drop the sump and clean out the pick up pipe for the oil filter, cos the mesh can get gunged up and impede flow

Yeah, that has crossed my mind but praps a good oil flush would do the same thing with less hassle?
