Question on Raditator Fan Cut in
« on: 22 March 2010, 08:42 »
Hi all.

I've had my MK 5 GTI for 4 months now and I'm realy loving it. I noticed over the weekend that the raditator fan cuts in really early after the car starts up from cold (before it gets to temp) and seems to run a lot. I worked out it was the raditator fan by turning the air con off when it was running and the fan still runs. It's almost constantly on. Is this normal or could there be a fault? All my other VAG cars fans only came on when the engine was really hot and turned off when normal temp was achieved.

Smithian - I had a mk5 2.0tdi that had a similar sounding issue (mine stayed on for quite a while after a drive - specifically in warm weather) and it was because the main cooling fan was broken. The Golf's engine has a back up fan in this case but is much smaller and runs earlier and longer. Might be worth getting it checked

Help on fixing AirCon Fan Problem
Hi all.

So I've done a bit more digging and actually it's the air con fan that's not working, so the main fan is running at full spped to cope. Question is what's wrong with the air con fan? Could it be the motor or thermo switch? Interestingly, when I start the car I don't hear the usual ticking noise of the aircon compressor kicking in but if I turn the aircon to 'lo', the dashboard fans speed up and cold air comes through (although it's hard to tell if it's the cold air from out side or aircon cold air due to the weather) but the aircon fan doesn't kick in nor do I hear the compressor tick?

Anyone got any ideas as to what could be the issue? Don't really want to send it to the stealer if it's a simple fix.

Ian.

Take it to a air con specialist, will be cheeper than the dealer, if the compressor is not working then you have a low pressure switch or it is out of gas.
