He is saying £1500 to £2000 for fitting the re conditioned engine if he can find one, he says the big end has gone and it is past repairing!!!

So I guess he's saying the crank has had it. I guess it's cheaper to throw in a 2nd hand engine than get the crank re ground and all new bearings plus the cost of the strip down and rebuild.

It is finding the engine thats the problem then getting it fitted, 2 days labour plus the engine would be the best part of £1000 and then parts and VAT, he is going to get back to me in the morning!!!

Anyone know where a good 1.4 mk5 engine is going cheap!!!!

See above!

Yeah, only problem with them is they have just had a fire so it will be some time before they will be able to help you. Im guessing your going to need your car back on the road ASAP.

Just need it sorted really and for as little as possible!!!

Will have to wait and see what they say about getting an engine tommorow and again take it from there, looking like I will replace it and then just get rid of the blooming thing, money down the drain but what can I do really, it needs sorted and hopefully he can pick one up at a reasonable price.

How much would the labour be roughly 2 days £35 an hour £560 plus vat and parts plus an engine £600 so £1500 wouldnt be far off??

SWtill not happy that its only done 45,000 miles and is knackered!!!

Gutted for you mate. I've not really heard of a complete fail on the mk5s. Certainly 996's are popping all over the place but Porsche like vw are not interested. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

Unlucky mate, sounds like a bit of a sh!t situation to be in.

Even if you got a good will gesture from VW, they's want to fit it surely, and you can bet there rates won't be as cheap as the indy, so would proably work out similar or dearer, but with loads of added hasslehoff.

Can you not claim on your insurance for something like this? (assuming your F/C)

To get goodwill to replace a high level brake light on my spoiler I put I got the dealers to back me up saying it was a stupid design, a full service histrory, pointed out that I bought all my consumables (ie oil / washer fluid etc) from the stealers, that half my family drove VAGs and how disapointed I was with the brand etc etc.  I got goodwill for half the cost ....

Without a full histroy, and if you didn't buy it from a stealers I think you are on your own to be honest  :undecided:

Even if you do get a 'stamp' in the book, servicing is recorded on the dealer network system.  So they will know you aren't on the level...

Playing devil's advocate but what if you had it serviced at a local garage using genuine parts? That won't be recorded on the dealer's system.  Although i guess I'll answer the quesiton anyway in that you should therefore have a receipt for the work.....  Catch 22 really  :undecided:

The only goodwill I've had was on the window clips for my Mk4 but that was a common problem to the car.  Although i was never asked for full service history or where I purchased it from just the age and mileage  :undecided:

As far as VW are concerned getting it serviced outside the dealer network is giving money to the competition.  I was told to ham it up as much as possible with regards brand loyalty etc.  I can see their point.

Then again I guess it depends on the severity of the problem.  Unless you run it without oil that just shouldn't happen and IMO VW should support you.

Overtons eh?  You in the Aberdeen area?

Yes in the Aberdeen area mate

Havent done anything out of the ordinary with the car just run it chnaged the oil regularly and generally looked after it as good as I could, never put it to the dealers but used Volks Centre in Kingswells before...

Thats the way i look at it as well with regards the problem VW should support me but there you go!!

GF's sisters Polo suffered a snapped cambelt. It had been servied as per VW requirements using VW parts but at indpendant garage. VW weren't interested - car had covered 60k miles on an 04 plate. SHe put a recon engine in (from a Seat) and part ex'd it.

Best of luck.

That is uncommon but are you sure the engines gone? It's only one persons opinion. If it goes at 45,000 I'm sure VW would want to know about it.

An Update

Looks like he cant source an engine for the car and he has tried a load of breakers yards and other places, looks like a new engine froom Volkswagen and the cost of fitting it.

Just looking for a bit of advice really, is it worth just scrapping it or would I be better sticking the engine in and running it for a couple of years??

Would a new engine give me a good life for the car?

The cars worth about £4500 would it depreciate with a new engine in it at trade in? Or just scrap it as he is saying £2300 to fit a new engine!! How much is it worth for scrap?
