Yes that the choice mate, will find out this aft what it will cost to sort with the ind lad and then see how to play it.

To have it towed to them and then pay for them to look at it at there rate then for them to wriggle out of paying it would leave me well out of pocket, so might just have to swallow the cost.

Still rankles as it has only done 45,000 miles and I certainly wont be buying another golf thats for sure!!

Cheers for the advice.

Are Volkswagen any good at goodwill gestures?

It might not be as bad as you think but no point 2nd guessing until you're told for sure.  Though make sure you inspect the engine yourself to clarify what parts have given up etc - make sure you're not ripped off

In all honesty I don't know as I've never had to push for a goodwill claim but the more history you got then the better the chances you will have.  Be firm and stand your ground but don't get into a shouting match as I've found it gets you nowhere fast

To get goodwill to replace a high level brake light on my spoiler I put I got the dealers to back me up saying it was a stupid design, a full service histrory, pointed out that I bought all my consumables (ie oil / washer fluid etc) from the stealers, that half my family drove VAGs and how disapointed I was with the brand etc etc.  I got goodwill for half the cost ....

Without a full histroy, and if you didn't buy it from a stealers I think you are on your own to be honest  :undecided:

Even if you do get a 'stamp' in the book, servicing is recorded on the dealer network system.  So they will know you aren't on the level...

Playing devil's advocate but what if you had it serviced at a local garage using genuine parts? That won't be recorded on the dealer's system.  Although i guess I'll answer the quesiton anyway in that you should therefore have a receipt for the work.....  Catch 22 really  :undecided:

The only goodwill I've had was on the window clips for my Mk4 but that was a common problem to the car.  Although i was never asked for full service history or where I purchased it from just the age and mileage  :undecided:

It needs a new engine the independent lad has just confirmed, he has been onto Overton and they have dont have one so it is hunt an engine now...

I did buy it from the dealers about 3 years ago but dont have a full service history, they said once I have found out what is wrong to give them a call but they would need to do there own report and it would have to be towed 50 miles to them as well so would cost a good few quid for them to investigate!!!!! even then once they have done the report they may not pay much of the cost!!!

It really annoys me that after 45,000 miles they are taking no
responsibilty for anything!!!!!

How much will I be looking at for a re conditioned engine and fitting?

Reconditioned engine will be hard to find I would have thought.

Your 2 main options are a new unit from VW (probably circa £1500) or one from a car in a breakers yard (ball park £350). Then labour at your garage (£40 an hour at a guess).

Either way you're looking at an extensive bill. Not sure on the value of 1.4 MKV's as to whether it's worth it or not.

A quick look at Autotrader suggest that a early MKV 1.4 with 45K on is worth approx £5K.

If it were me I'd pick up an engine from a breakers and do the swap myself. Paying for someone else to do it is going to bring the cost up to close what the car is worth, not to ention a replacement engine will devalue the car.

Tough call.

He is saying £1500 to £2000 for fitting the re conditioned engine if he can find one, he says the big end has gone and it is past repairing!!!

I wouldnt know where to start to replace an engine so I am at his mercy but he seems trust worthy enough.

It is finding the engine thats the problem then getting it fitted, 2 days labour plus the engine would be the best part of £1000 and then parts and VAT, he is going to get back to me in the morning!!!

Anyone know where a good 1.4 mk5 engine is going cheap!!!!
