Engine Replacement on a Mk5

I have had my Mk5 1.4 54 plate Golf for the best part of 3 years and it has only done 45,00 miles and the engine has gone!!!

I was driving down to St Andrews on saturday and got about 30 miles down the road when the oil pressure light came on and I pulled over straight away and got to a garage luckily, once the lad had a look at it he said it was the rod ends?? that had gone and it would need a new engine!!! There was a fair bit of crutching coming from the engine.

Would VW take any responsibility for a cars engine going after only 45,000 miles or am I on my own??

Any advice would be welcome lads.

Talk to your local dealer and explain what's happened and push them for a goodwill claim

Make sure your service book is stamped up to date and haggle hard  :smiley:

Dont have the full service history, thats the only thing but going to call them and see what they say this morning cheers mate

Just of the phone to them, they want a full service history and for me to get it towed to them at my cost and then at my cost they will look at it and if it is then proven to be there fault they might cover some of the cost of the repair!!!

Where would I get one of these stamps cough cough

Know anyone with a garage?

You might be better off getting a report from an independent garage as that would be cheaper than paying a VW dealer for it.  If it is found to be a fault with the engine you can then argue your case with VW directly

Have you always serviced it on time?

It is in an independent garage just now and thw lad is looking at just now to see what the problem is, I really cant believe that the engine will have gone at 45,000 miles and needs totally repaired surely this is not common?? They said find out what is wrong and then call them back and they will see what they could do but not holding out much hope for them paying anything out!!!

Volks have said they would want it looked at by them before they would pay out for any repairs but at there costs of towing it to them and then them compiling a report it would work out a fortune!!!

It's not very common at all though I'm not up to speed on any problems with the 1.4.  Though saying that my dad had a 1.4 MK4 Golf and that liked to drink oil like it was going out of fashion yet it was within the manufacturer's tolerences!  :shocked:

I guess you got to weigh up the costs of fighting for goodwill or buying a 2nd hand / recond engine and have that fitted and getting your car back on the road ASAP

Yes that the choice mate, will find out this aft what it will cost to sort with the ind lad and then see how to play it.

To have it towed to them and then pay for them to look at it at there rate then for them to wriggle out of paying it would leave me well out of pocket, so might just have to swallow the cost.

Still rankles as it has only done 45,000 miles and I certainly wont be buying another golf thats for sure!!
