gti fuel pump dead??

was driving in my 8v gti ('86 k-jet, pb code engine) car was pulling along very strongly but just died on me at a roundabout, I turned the car over on the key, it coughed like it fired up but died a second later, so I'm guessing that it has no fuel?
I've got it recovered back to mine and have been trying to find out the problem that it has.

my first point of call was the fuel pump relay and I got a new one from the local Euro car parts (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_1.8_1986/p/Car-Parts/Electrical-and-Lighting/Electrical/Regulators-Relays-and-Solenoids/?451440030&1&37b00c831ffc729015cb47b189ac588f9e007784&FPUY)I also bought a new fuel filter as well thinking that it could do with a change.
but this hasn't made any difrance, and the new relay is numbered 167 and is a lot smaller that the one in the number 2 slot in the fuse box!
if you place a finger on the old relay and turn the key I can feel a click so its working fine?
Ive tried kneeing next to the fuel pump that's under the car so to hear if its priming and its all very quiet so now as changing the relay didn't work, I'm thinking that the under car fuel pump and /or high lift pumps are dead?
I had made the error of running it out of fuel the other week so could this puled a load of crud into the pumps and screwed them?

wouldnt have clogged the in tank pump as it has a gauze mesh on it to prevent crap from being sucked in. can you hear the lift pump prime when ignition is switched on? climb in the boot, lift the carpet and have a listen while someone else turns the ignition on. 

if it makes no noise, but the under car pump makes a right racket, then you have a faulty lift pump.

changed mine yesterday and it was dead easy. ran rough for a minute (air in system?) but has been fine since

Also if yours is a K-Jet system its not a PB engine, possibly a DX? someone else could confirm that i expect!

I'll try changing the lift pump first, I swapped the main under car pump around two years ago so I hope that one is sill fine.

As for the engine code, the log book says it's an EV but I'm sure the early 8 vavle 1.8 with the mechancal k-tronic injecton are PB lumps?

Check the pressure in the lines first, if they are wrong there is a little screw (go knows where, i was in the pub when a lad was telling me). it should be running as 3.6

PB lumps are '89 on Digi engines. I think F reg is the changeover period, as my F reg barn find car was a digi with small bumpers and the older electrics

well, lift pumps changed, it was the original one with the crimped hose clips, also tested the plug to it, its pumping out 8 volts, so its getting power.
BUT the car still won't start!
tested the under body pump, couldnt get a volt reading (i had the ignition on the first click, to be honest, i get confused with auto electrics!), so im lost as to whats the trouble, could the relay be at fault or am i right in thinking that the under body pump will need to be replaced?

can someone put me in the right direction!

8volts is too low, can you now hear the intank pump run for a few secs when you turn the ign on?


if yes, unplug the electrics from the under car pump and connect a test lamp/ multimeter.... you should get a 12v or the test lamp light up for a few secs when you turn the ign on. if yes pump u/s if not relay

bear in mind the pumps do not run continuously whilst the ign is on thou


has your car got an immobilizer fitted, it could be that relay thats kicked the bucket??

I tried to test the plug to the underside pump, couldn't get a reading but then I was out with the car on my own, so I guess that I'm not going to be able to test it for power, same thing applies to trying to hear if the pump is priming, as I cant turn the keys and have an ear on the pumps either!
the car has a working alarm (Scorpion) with an immobilizer, but I've been told (by an alarm/ I.C.E installer) that as the alarm works on 2 circuits and if it had kicked in, the car wouldn't turn over?

ah, you  need a test lamp so you  can see it, or someone to turn the ign on 4 you. The 2 immobilizer will have 2 relays then 1 for each circuit. I would see if you can make sure power is getting to that pump first then investigate the relays.
