Gear alignment

Hey all. I have read the how-to guide on gear linkage but am unsure of something.

I've just got my 16v and the gearbox was fitted by my mate for me, however I don't think he aligned it up so I can not get into 5th gear.

I'm not sure at what point I should pick up from in the how-to guide to re-align the linkage so I can find 5th. As in, what do I need to take off or undo ect... Any help is greatly appriciated.

(P.S. Any help may result in a beer or something at GTi Spring Festival on the 11th April.)

Have u checked that the little plastic link rod is not broke,mine was and i couldnt get 5th

read from the part about using the tool or a cassette to hold the gearstick in poosition, undo the pinch bolt and wiggle the linkage in the bay to centre it then nip it back up. as above check the short white rod hasnt snapped at the end, another reason for loosing 5th

Oh, forgot to ask... I got the full linkage kit for my 8v GTi, but I assume that if needs be I can use it for the 16v? Or do I need a different kit?

Well, look out for an AA van towwing a Golf, that'll be me at this rate. Or a very pissed off looking guy walking in through the gate... Either way you're getting the idea I assume...
