Unfortunatly most mk1 owners know what they have got these days, so getting a decent one, for peanuts, is going to be hard work. Just keep an eye out for an old biddy driving one, then follow them home and offer them some firewood for winter, or mint-humbugs!
As for a conversion - it really does depend on what you start with and how deep your pockets are. Anything from a 2.0 8v into a GTI to a new 1.8T is possible. Or you could go all out and build it around a TVR chassis, engine and gearbox!! Anything is possible, it just comes down to cash and imagination.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

Looks bloody tidy to me - and wheels & tyres good. I would buy if looking for a project!

might have something up your street come tuesday I will get my hands on a pair of mk1 gti 1.8 models.
one is in black the other in white.
the black one is to be used as a donor car but the white one looks pretty good. it failed a mot about a year ago and the bloke who I'm buying it off bought all the bits it needs for an mot.
I bought the pair for a steal and although I do need a few bits off the car the white one will be pretty much whole. If I remember right I think its only got 75k on the clocks. the plan is to pick the two of them up on tuesday and strip the black one and then tart up the white one and get an mot done.
if your interested or if anyone else is interested just drop me a line and I will try to sort something out
