Heater stopped working.

Hi All,

Hope you can help. My heater has all of a sudden decided not to work.

I have checked the fuses they sem okay. I dont know the number of fuse though to replace it incase its a bit faulty.

Do you think it may be the switch??.

All speed setting dont work.

try the motor. put it on the full setting and then try to spin it carefuly with your hand. if it spins then ill tell you how to fix it later as i cant be arsed right now

I know you cant be arsed but is there an easy way of getting to the motor
looks like a pain in the arse.

Okay put the setting on full and spun the motor and nothing.

Im sure i saw a diagram showing the fuse positions and what they related to in another thread somewhere but cant find it.

Can anyone help.

Alright Andy, what year is your cab ? Mines a J and I can have a look in my owners manual to see which fuse position my heater is in if it's around the same year. 

A few years ago when I had an old *ahem *cough astra, the heater packed up on that and I had to give the unit in the scuttle well under the bonnet a little whack with a hammer and it used to work again, might be that some of the brushes are worn in the unit itself

Its year is 88,89. I have took the plastic cover of the motor a tapped it with the hammer and not alot happened.

Maybe i need to hit it a bit harder.

Hi Andy, I'm sure your fuses must be the same as mine then, I'll grab my owners manual with the fuse list later and PM you which number it is. Other than than the fuse being naff you may have to pester blue mk2 for his idea.

I dont know much about mk1's but i took the motor out of its cover in my mk2 and gave all the metal bits and brushes a good clean. the water used to drip from the scuttle tray and onto the motor causing the bushes to get wet and then not work.

Have u got a multimeter mate?

Andy, blower fuse on mine is number 14 and it's 20a. If it's not the fuse try putting the blower on full and then tapping a screw driver with a hammer at the unit as you tried before (maybe a bit and only a bit, harder  ). If it's not the fuse I reckon some of your brushes in the unit itself may have gone, if it works after the tap then its deffo your brushes as when you tapped the unit it spun the brushes and there is now a contact.  Good luck.
