Possible drive shaft issue??
« on: 15 March 2010, 18:09 »
I have recently changed the top mount on my golf and the spring (it had snapped) I don't know if this is a coinsidence or not. In the last two days, this has happened;

When driving a horrible clunking noise started to develop from the front driverside area of the wheel. It was even worse when turning corners and now is a really loud, creaking noise. I jacked that side of the car up and turned the wheel and a creaking noise seemed to be coming from the drive shaft. If i hold the drive shaft whilst turning the wheel i can feel the noise if that makes sense.

Does anyone have any idea of what this might be, i'm not to familiar with drive shafts and dont really know how they connect to the gearbox etc. Im really hoping th gearbox isnt buggered, that sounds costly. Any thoughts/ suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers

sounds like the outer cv joint is badly worn. This is not too bad an issue as they arent particularly expensive and fairly straight forward to fix. How long ago did you have your spring done? The driveshaft joint would have been removed when this was done so perhaps you could take it back to the garage.

I changed the spring, the driveshaft joint was kept in during this process.
Could a faulty cv joint cause it to make a funny noise whilst reversing as well?

Yes. How did you change the spring without removing the driveshaft end from the hub?

Yes. How did you change the spring without removing the driveshaft end from the hub?

You undo the two bolts at the bottom of the shock absorber, undo the top nut, and the shock absorber comes off as one piece?

Then you compress the spring and undo the nut holding the top mount on. Remove the top mount and waheeeey the spring comes off :shocked:

does everyone think that it is the cv joint then? I could take a video tommorow of the noise if it helps

Outer CV joint Ive only seen it make a clonking noise when your turning and pulling away not driving in a straight line.

spring should have no effect on cv joint, if you can locate which end of the shaft the noise is coming from
