OK... this is going to affect me, as my car is due on the second week of April.
The Golf R emits 199g/kg - so what happens?
Am I correct in saying £425 for the first years tax, and then £225 thereafter?

I'll be making sure VW pick up this extra £200 since they've had me hanging on since May 2009!!!

Sorry but i can't see what your gripe is - VW are not to blame about the road tax in the UK. The cr4p labour government announced the 'showrrom tax' nearly 2 years ago, so its hardl;y anything new, they just 'did us a favour' and delayed it, hence you've forgotten about it.  The fact you decided to order a car that wasn't even officially launched withiout any expected delivery date , which looks like it will arrive mid April, is hardly VWs fault is it ??

I sympathise with all those who waited so long for their cars - VW and their dealers should have been a lot clearer with the order times, and if build weeks have been affected by having to fit in scrapage builds then they should have been informing those delayed as a result. But they didn't.  There has been enough internet traffic on VW order times for it not to be a surprise.

VW has in the main honoured their list prices at time of ordering to protect buyers form some of the price rises. They even protected some from the VAT rise as a result of longer than anticipated lead times. They have to draw the line somewhere.

Be thankful you'll get your car before VAT hits 20% !!

I don't think the new tax would stop any of us getting a GTI or Gtd. But it should not stop us from having a gripe. We are about the highest payers for fuel in the whole of Europe most of which is tax. Our roads are a disgrace and our public transport system is not much better.
The UK has unbelievable debt, we hear eighteen grand for every person in the UK over 16 years of age. That is going to equal more tax again and cut backs on things like road maintenance. Us the public have just to accept everything that is thrown our way. Make no mistake it does not matter what government is in power we are going to get hammered over the next ten years. Unless a national hero can stand up with the people behind him which we know wont happen.
On Order Golf GTI 5 Door Manual - Pearl Black - 18' Vision Alloys - Goodyear F1 Asymmetric Tyers - Sunroof - Xenon Lights - Touch Screen Cd Player With Dyneaudio amp and speakers - Folding Wing Mirrors - Dealer Fit - Steel VW kick plates - Front And Rear Mud Flaps - Sill boot protector - Boot liner - 3 year Service Plan - Carpet Matts With GTI Logo And Red Pipping.

When I actually placed my official order in October, I was told that I may see the car in 2009.  It then changed to definately being here in time for VW's VAT contribution, and now its mid April.
When I put the deposit down, the VW memos said the car would be available in September!!!

My dealer is already paying my VAT increase and has agreed the price I will be paying when I collect it - so I'm pretty sure they'll honour it.

Yup £425 for the first year and £235 for for 2011 onwards.

nick

Thanks - almost what I thought.  I don't grudge the £235 per year, but I would grudge paying an extra £200 on the retail price.  Part of my spec sheet says it includes 1 years road licence fund.

Fair enough and good luck - the VW price list includes ont he road costs incl road tax, but is only correct at time of printing, so you may hit a brick wall. Always worth trying tho

I might also point out that in this Times report petrol duty will go up by 1p plus the rate of inflation for the next three years. So they're expecting 3p next month.
Meanwhile with all the tax from the motorist going everywhere except back into transport I'll carry on dodging the potholes (sorry, craters) that haven't been fixed over the winter.

On a totally unrelated issue if I ever see Ed Balls' smug, slimy, arrogant f****** face on my tele again I'm likely to throw something very heavy at it!!! What a **** he is!!!!

 I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who despises the sight of that tw@t!

Called the dealer today as I'm waiting for a courtesy car... and whilst on the phone I asked about the showroom tax.
He said - 'don't worry, we'll take care of that'.

I called my dealer today to find out delivery of the car and the tax issue.

He said 100% guarantee it will be Mid \ late Feb for a 1st March Delivery.....
then 100% sure it will be March but worst case 1st week in April......
last week def will be before end of March....
today worst case 2nd week in April. wtf!!!

So I asked what about the tax rise, as car was supposed to be mid Feb for 1st March delivery I take it I don't have to pay.
He advised -correct and that I wouldn't be affected anyway.

You sound like you're having the same fun as I am!!  Never mind... it should be here soon, and isn't going to cost you any more than expected.  At least the dealer is honouring something!

I'm not clear, is this VW picking up the tax rise, or the dealers by choice?

I'd guess cars ordered before the new showroom tax comes into effect won't be affected and it will only be those ordered after that date.
