Engine and Gearbox Additives/Treatments
« on: 14 March 2010, 14:09 »
I wonder if anyone has used Slick 50 High Performance Engine Treatment (750 ml cost £24.99) and Slick 50 Manual Gearbox Treatment (50 ml cost £15.99) in their cars. I have used these products in all my previous cars without any issues and found that the engine runs much more smoothly and the geabox changes are also smoother and slicker.
Any comments and opinions will be much appreciated.

So you've used it in all of your previous cars and you want comments and opinions, why? Are you doubting the product now after all these years?

No doubts. Just if anyone else has knowledge or experience of using these products.

Might do this in a year or so but not just yet.
Just want to see how owners are responding overall to the various re-maps that are available. There has already been a copious thread about this.
Some of them seem to be REVOlting related.
I will probably find the GTi is fast enough for me.
There are also warranty and insurance premium issues to consider with re-mapped cars.

Years gone by I used to use the slick 50. Then someone told me it makes no difference at all. So I gave it a google where plenty scientific evidence suggested it was a waste of time adding it.

I still add a fuel additive every time I fill up. Have been driving diesels for the past 15 years and noticed with the fuel additive you don't get smoke coming out of the exhaust under hard acceleration. So when my GTI arrives I will be adding a petrol equivalent to it

Captain:
They have said the same about fuel additives!
But from my experience I have definitely noticed smoother idling, slicker gearchanges, slightly better mpg and a slight decrease in overall noise levels by using Slick.
Maybe I am in a minority. :lipsrsealed:

I can understand why you would want to use it , I did also. All I would say is google it and make up your own mind.

fuel additives again I would say google it as there is strong evidence saying it works. Certainly it did for me as far as smoke coming out the exhaust of a diesel car is concerned. Once I stopped using it after a while I had smoking coming from the exhaust. After adding the additive the smoke stopped. I'm talking white smoke under hard acceleration not black smoke. As for faster and better miles per gallon go I have no idea , but a cleaner engine is a more efficient engine so they might be some truth in it.
Stagecoach buses ran half their feet on a fuel additive and half without. The results were extremely positive to the fuel additive and so they now use it on all there buses. Again its all in google UK under fuel additive.

Captain:
Read these!

I will keep researching, though it seems it is not prudent to use engine additives.
Thanks.

Have a colleague who used to be a design engineer for Jaguar drivetrains, and was at the time into heavily modded Ford Cossies. He knew of several people who'd used Slick 50 and the end result was a disaster. Whether other factors were to blame is another matter but it seemed odd that those that had used it came a cropper.

Oil technology is so much better these days that i can't see them being much use at all.

I once used an engine additive in an old Ka runaround i had, that was tappety as hell and the engine additive made no difference at all - wasn't bothered really as i only had the car 10 weeks.
