1St & 2ND gear selection problems
« on: 14 March 2010, 09:47 »
Morning all,

For as long as I can remember now I have been having problems selecting 1st & 2nd gears. When im driving and come to a stand still in traffic i have to change down to 2nd then 1st otherwise trying to engage 1st once come to a stand still is near on impossible sometimes!
This lso occurs upon strat up, sometimes can be a real b!tch to select 1st gear, the problem seems worse from cold so i was thinking it may be a gear oil issue or even a synchro hub/slipring worn, has anyone else had similar issues or resolutions for the concern?

Have'nt tried adjusting gear linkage as of yet. It's also worth noting im not running standard clutch/flywheel, have had converted to single mass flywheel and sachs performance clutch.
Car details as follows:
1999 mk4 Golf, 1.8GTI turbo AGU

Cheers for any help offered

sounds like worn syncros to me if you have to change down like that :undecided:

I'd realign your selector cables mate. The same thing happened to me and I followed a guide (I'll try and find it) and aligned it all up. Works a treat now. I also changed a few bushed on the selector while I was in there.

That would be gearbox out and stripped to fit a new synchro, have priced up a synchro, can get for £200 and can do the job myself so no cost in labout, i'm holding off though cos im convinced if I do this repair i'm convinced something else will go wrong in the box a few months down the line and i will have to take it out and strip it again which lets face it would be mega ball ache!

Thats what I was thinking as if it was the gear linkage adjustment it wouldn't improve/get worse from day to day or be affected by ambient temperatures

Cheers for the input though!
