GTI 8v vs 16v. WHY DOES MY 16V FEEL SO SLOW?
« on: 06 November 2004, 14:53 »
Hi Guys(I've posted this on the mk3 forum too), I was just wondering, I Have a mk3 93 GTI 8V and a 97 16v has just come my way too. Now i know that the 8v is meant to be more touquey but surly there cant be that much difference. But my 16v feels slugish as hell in comparison so Im not sure if theres somthing wrong with it or what. I havent booted it top end yet but does anyone know wat they are meant to do as standard? my 8v will do 120mph ish.  Also does anybody have any ideas on the feesabliy of putting a lower ratio gear box on a 16v? mine is sloppy as hell so im looking to replace it anyway

dunno if this applies to mk3's as well but mk2 8v vs 16v there shouldnt be any noticeable difference up to 4000rpm and then the 16v should pull away easily. its harder to set the timing up on a 16v so id say check the valve and ignition timing, mine was underpowered cos one of the cams had skipped a link on the cam chain, so timing was well off.

if your 8v feels more powerful than the 16v then you have a serious problem with your 16v

there should be no need to change the gearbox either

if anything i would get the 16v on a rolling road and this will tell you why its losing its power

simple things like broken lambda sensors in the exhaust can cause serious power loss

Humm thanks guys, I'll take all this on board and investergate further. Im still quite confused. The 16v is currenlty at the garrage at the mo anyway, but they cant find anything wrong with the engin and the put it through its MOT too. Surly if the Lamda sensor was dead the immisions would be off. I've had that prob before u see.  :)
