I'm new to this forum and am thoroughly enjoying my Mk5 GTI.

One things that strikes me is the number of threads where punters are trying to establish the value of their car pre-sale or asking for advice on the asking price of a prospective purchase.  OK, we can all take a look in Parkers/Glass's guides or compare with the asking price of similar cars - but this can be misleading particularly with the Mk5 GTI - where a fully loaded spec can add a couple of grand to a car's value.

So how about a sticky giving full spec and the actual buying/selling price achieved for our cars - I guess most of us would spill the beans and it would surely be a valuable tool for newbies.

The reason that we haven't had a sticky on this subject is due to continually moving prices and the fixed posting dates.

eg's

1. Second hand values for MKV GTI's went UP over a period of around six months by around £100-£150 a month early last year, but now the MKVI is established the values have levelled off again.

2. A Post dated 2 yrs ago on a sticky doesn't equate to the price you'd get now - Mr X sold his car fo £10,000 and it was a 55reg - after the post being in the sticky for 2 yrs it wouldn't mean anything as a 55reg car would be 2 yrs older.

I do see your point, but it isn't too hard to use the search function or go back a few pages for recent threads on recent prices

Values are a moveable feast to be fair, and "worth" is defined as what someone is willing to pay...

I could say my GTI is worth £1k more than I paid for it a year ago, but that reviewed valuation is irrelevant if I can't actually find a buyer at that price!

I'd imagine it be a loonnnngggg and rather random thread, plus too many factors for a definitive answer............ spot the accountant!

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Fair comments - totally appreciate the fluidity in the market - it just struck me that it would be a useful reference for the (apparently) many new posters who seem to be enticed by some rather outrageously-priced high mileage cars !

A decent spec & a well looked after car will always do well on the 2nd hand market... :afro:

Come to think of it, if I ever want to sell my car, I'll need to spec it up from it's current state of poverty-ness!
