snoopy dont get so defensive man!!!!! i LOVE the MK6 GTI!!!!!  30 plus mpg is perfectly acceptable to me!!!!!!! the BMW 3 series is NOT the type of car i wish to own!!!!!! M3 maybe......but i expect more than the 19mpg i frequently saw on 99octane fuel in my MK5!!!!! which brand of juice tends to get the best MPG out of the MK6???????????
Im not gettting defensive im just saying if you believe the figures you quoted for the BMW are real life and its what you want go for the bmw..
That pedal on the right stop pressing it so hard.  Learn to drive smoothly. Turn off the engine in a que of traffic thats what that key thing does  19mpg its something your doing. Ours use to do ~30 in my hands on daily commute into town our lasses hands 33, The DSG at work was 3mpg down on whatever i got out of the manual, so its something your doing to get 19mpg.

Also how are you measuring this? Are you using the brim to brim method. Computers lie and guessing is fatal.
Also was the car standard.

I've got a complete petrol record for my car so far, I'll dig it out - it's about 32mpg though.

I don't drive like a maniac most of the time, but what I just love about the GTi is the overtaking.  The road I drive most often has quite a few decent overtaking opportunities if you're stuck behind a slowcoach, but it depends on having the power to take the chance.  That's where the DSG comes into its own.  I don't even have to think about changing down, or what gear I should be in - just see the chance, put the foot down, and bye-bye ditherer.

I'm getting poorer economy in the cold weather, presumably because the engine is running cold for longer.

Rolfe.

I always view MPG figures as a good objective way of comparing different models, rather than wondering whether you will actually achieve any specific figure. The difference between the 2 figures is likely to be realistic as you are comparing like with like.

EG If car A is quoted as 38mpg and the equivalent figure for car B is 30mpg the you can reasonably assume that you will use a fair amount less petrol if you buy car A.

If you're as sad as I am, for an estimated annual mileage you can work out how much you will save on fuel costs.

Strangely, over about 3 years ownership the extra purchase cost of a GTI over a F***s ST is about the same as the saving in fuel  costs!

My Mk5 GTi is averaging 32mpg according to the trip computer. I have achieved 42mpg on a run back from Cornwall. Not bad given it's a 2.0 Turbo.

I had a MK5 GTI and honestly struggled to see 25mpg.....without driving like a loon ALL the while.

My MK5 is fantastic on petrol. I can get 30 easily if I drive normally, consider its modded aswell, im chuffed with it.

31mpg - Most of my journeys are short blasts but usually hampered by traffic.

40+mpg - Have had this a number of times when in slow moving motorway traffic.

22mpg - A blast on the way home (a + b roads) will often get me this figure.

I find that if you really want to blast your car then low 20's is what you will get back. However if you want to poodle around the high 30's to low 40's is easily achievable.

p.s. I am also remapped
