I don't get it
Why buy a 'fast car' and then worry about fuel consumption?
The GTI is a car for petrol heads and boy is it s**t off a shovel fast?  For those who worry about burning fuel the GTI isn't for you
Gizzy

I really don't get it!
Call me old fashioned, but if you want to get a hot hatch, why are you discussing mpg?
It is like you want to get a woman pregnant whilst wearing a well fitting condom!
Daft!

Don't think anyone is obsessing about mpg, just discussing and comparing as per the thread title. I , like others sometimes check a journey for mpg - no harm in that. I also have plenty of fun and don't give a hoot about the petrol most of the time.

. The MPG was SO shocking on my MK5 GTI .......MPG is NOT my MAIN concern, but i expect to see something CLOSE to the official figures, UNLIKE my experience with the MK5 GTI.
Then your imo looking at the wrong car theres not a huge difference and if you were unhappy with your mk5 a couple more mpg here or there is not going to make you happy.

well snoopy....how come BMW can put a 6 cylinder 272bhp engine in its latest 330s and it returns close to 40mpg yet VW cannot get a 207bhp(admittedly turboed) TSI engine to return better then 39mpg combined????? in these ECO obssessed times why are manufacturers not working on their petrol engines and getting those to return better MPGs????? not everyone wants to spunk a FORTUNE lining the oil companies pockets, yet we do not all want a non-revving Diesel lump either.........

Even driving 'normally' there will be big differences in mpg depending on the type of journey you normally do, the type of fuel you use (95 or 99RON) and the type of gearbox you have.

For me, I'm happy with 33mpg on average. Mostly 30 minute+ journeys, 99RON, manual.

I get 40+ most days on my way to/from work. I 'save' this up and burn it all away at the weekend.

Buy the BMW then, i don't know any BMW that comes anywere close to its official figures.
As for the petrol engines in geneal companys are doing as you say they are producing small cc turbo engines with similar outputs to bigger NA units. The VW 2.0TSI is not one of these, the 1.2tsi is and the older 1.4tsi sort of. VW concentrated more on there TDIs its why bluemotion models are mostly TDIs.

snoopy dont get so defensive man!!!!! i LOVE the MK6 GTI!!!!!  30 plus mpg is perfectly acceptable to me!!!!!!! the BMW 3 series is NOT the type of car i wish to own!!!!!! M3 maybe......but i expect more than the 19mpg i frequently saw on 99octane fuel in my MK5!!!!! which brand of juice tends to get the best MPG out of the MK6???????????
