Voltage Regulator?
« on: 10 March 2010, 18:20 »
Hi. I hope some one can help. I have recently been having disco lights and the battery light flickers on the rare occasion. Then other day i noticed that my dash lights were no where near as bright as they should be. On Monday night the car decided to die on me, Got the RAC man to check it and the alternator was only getting 3v. Battery giving out correct voltage.

The alternator has been bench tested and all is good.

Could this be the voltage regulator giving up the ghost.

Any advice would be grateful

Greg.

the volt reg is screwed to the back of the alternator, remove that and check the brushes are a good length and roughly equal. then look at the unit ands you'll notice a ring around one of the screw holes, give this a buff up and the area on the alternator it touches so as to give good contact. last of all, if ytou look in the hole the voltreg came from, you'll spot a metal prong, clean this up and the surface on the volt reg that it touches.

had exactly your problem on a mates 16v, did all the above and it was sorted :)
