Common problem on the VR is plug leads (my dad went through two sets)

Or coilpack if it's an OBD2

what year is it mate? Does it have a distributor on the end of the head, or a rubber block where the plug leads come out of?

If its a dizzy (obd1) then the coil is bolted under the wiper panel, can see it wi the bonnet up, only 2 screws hold it on I think, and the other kind (obd2) is a proper 6 way coilpack bolted to the rhs end of the head.

Here is a great write up on that maf (well its the audi S2 one but identical to the obd1 vr6 maf) to test it and see how it should be cleaned, great pics too.

The hoses are rubbish and do split esp. on the breather side underneath where the oil collects lol

The early vrs have a rubber inlet tube thats good, but the later ones are plastic and they crack sometimes, letting in un-metered air.

Before doing anything get the codes read....might help point you in the right direction.
