Mystery noise: engine, gearbox?

I have a noise that's annoying me. It's only really apparent on the motorway when doing approx 60mph+. This probably isn't the best explanation, but it's quite a deep whirring noise: whir whir whir whir whir whir........ hopefully you get the idea

I have found the following (all at motorway speeds)

If i turn left the noise goes (even just changing lane)
If i come off the throttle the noise goes
If i dip the clutch or go into neutral and let the revs drop the noise goes

When under load the noise is more apparent (eg going up a hill)
If i dip the clutch or go into neutral and keep the revs between 3-4k the noise isn't as loud, but is still there


Any ideas as to what could be causing it?

It sounds like it could be a dodgy tyre, try swapping front to rears for a starter

I had thought about that, but surely the noise would be constant and there regardless of engine load?

When i had a dodgy tyre on my first golf i thought a rear wheel bearing had gone. This doesn't sound like that though, the noise isn't continuous.

Jack the offending side up and I would check the bearing, disc/pads maybe the CV joint?

The fact that it isn't there whilst rolling along at 70 in neutral made me think that its unlikely to be a wheel bearing. Also the noise isn't continuous like a wheel bearing

Sounds clutch/g.box related to me.. Could also be an auxilary belt maybe..

Wheel bearing
Exhaust
Clutch release bearing



Its probably a few separate issues, I find it hard to believe they are all related.

(I have no idea on the 9a 'box by the way, I assume that it has a normal style flywheel/clutch, rather than the arse about face the 020 uses?)

Sounds like a clutch release bearing, but it shouldn't be so noisey you can hear it at motorway speeds.

With the car at tick over parked up, depress the clutch pedal, see if any noise goes, if it does, then I suggest the bearing.

i agree with you on all the counts of if it's there when your rolling, but not when your foot is on the clutch/netural then it has to be transmission noise, poss diff bearings, as when they are not under load, they can grumble.
