As some of you may recall I've had the most extreme bad luck with my Golfs (4th now in 3 years) whilst still having a lot of fun of course.

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=82906.0

I haven't done any work on my latest Golf all year really expect lowering it and putting my rims on so now I have a fresh MOT, it's that time to get my semi-rebuilt engine back in and running again.

I have just purchased a Scorpian stainless system off eBay (£112 - Bargin) for the swap so that's the latest addition to the build. One question, I have a mild steel 4-2-1 manifold; will this be ok to attatch to my stainless system?

Also the main reason for this thread is because I'm a bit out of touch with cars and things I'm not sure what bits I'll need for the swap. I know about gaskets etc but what are the vital things that are likely to do me over on the day?

I will update this page with progress on Saturday aswell as bumping my project thread :) Lots of picces to come!

stainless is a funny old thing, i would give scorpion a ring and ask if it will react. i cant see it being a problem but it depends what grade they used :undecided:

Cheers dan, i might have to give them a ring but can see now they will go..

"Well you can't do that because it make your engine blow up and smack you in the face, what you need is our 4-2-1 which costs £7,000,000. How would you like to pay for that?"

 Possibly, but I wouldn't have thought it would make that much difference, other than your manifold will rust faster than the rest of the system. Plenty of people run cat back s/s systems without any trouble so wouldn't forsee a problem.

Good luck

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

after abit more of a think i wouldnt worry too much, if it does react in any way it will only be on the flange and wouldnt be the end of the world! it wont deteriorate to the point it will become unuseable!

Make sure your new manifold is port-matched to the gaskets before you fit it.

Make sure you fit new manifold studs, good quality plain washers and the correct peened nuts, not nylock.

Fit a new genuine stat.

Buy new water housings unless you have good quality, relatively new ones - they go brittle and will crack given the opportunity.

Fit a new cambelt and tensioner, if the bolt on the end of the crank has been undone, fit a new one and torque it appropriately.

Don't take the M6 rocker cover studs down past the specified torque or you'll distort the rocker cover and it'll never seal.  Use a 2.0 rubber gasket, not a cork one.

Take the dizzi out and get a drill on the oil pump shaft and bring the oil pressure up that way.

Turn it over by hand before you try starting it - make sure it turns over smoothly and nothing contacts.

Was that what you wanted?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
