A quick question, if the ambient temp is low, say 1 or below do the sensors stop the air con from starting up??

I think its 4deg c on a vauxhall, so quite possibly

In which case am i right to assume that upon starting the car when at such levels, the compressor won't start if the aircon is switched on?

Yes as its the compressor that makes the Air cold  :grin:
