Horn help & handbrake help please
« on: 01 March 2010, 20:59 »
Hello again,

We've just bought a tidy black 3 door '97 Mk3 Gti 8v after the mystic blue VR6 (1.4) lookalike and I need to sort a few minor niggles.

1) The horn doesn't work - apparantly after the ignition switch buggered up the previous owner had the barrel replaced (keeping same key etc) however when it came back the horn doesn't work. Any easy points I can look at? Fuse, wiring behind steering wheel, earth point etc?? I haven't actually checked at the horn end yet wet weather etc but just thought I'd ask you guys for some help 1st

2) The brakes are spot on however the handbrake seems quite naff and feels as though its only biting on the drivers side. Again any common issues to look for? It had been stood a little while so maybe a sticky caliper? How does the handbrake work on the Mk3 please?

Cheers again

Mark.

Will be giving it a good going over this weekend to check all the bits and bobs, and maybe post some pics  Anyone have drivers side dashboard  airvent at all they would part with?

Hi the horn not got a clue, sorry.

The hand brake i've just done mine on my gti mk3 8v. There are 2 handbrake cables one for each side of the rear wheels. They feed under the rear of the car in to the car it'self just follow the old ones from the rear wheels. These the bolt on inside the car just behind the hand brake. Take the ash try out and take the 2 scdrews out and it show lift off and you can get to the handbrake cables easier to fit them and to adjust the new ones. It might be the old ones just need adjusting. If you do need new ones i think they are £12 eaach from GSF not too sure wot i paid now. Not hard to fit new ones though. When removing the old ones you might have to warm the end up under the car to get the old ones out. Hope this helps matey. steve.

the ends of the handbrake cables go to a pivot cam on each caliper, and force the caliper to bite down, they are prone to sticking. A wee squirt of wd40 cures this, dont get it on the pads or discs tho. Adjust the cable for 3 clicks roughly, the pivot point where the cable splits in 2 may be rusty as well.

The horn is controlled by a relay, if you press the horn push when the ignition is on but not running, you will hear it click, showing the wheel push and the relay are good, the horn uses live feed and earth return switching, check the fuse 13:
