Forge 007p

Right then,

Dropped my car off at a garage this morning (its a VW specialist near where I work). I have used them once before without any issues, and when i spoke to them on Friday to discuss what I wanted doing they seemed on the ball.

Anyway, I wanted to get some niggling problems sorted which I haven't had time to sort out (thermostat change, lower breather hose replaced, check out why the emissions light is on etc...). As I didn't know how to describe the hose I needed replacing, I decided to open the bonnet and show the mechanic which one it was. He seemed all okay with that but then I said I suspected there was a boost leak (last time Tim scanned my car about a month ago the code came up). First thing he said was to replace the DV with a standard one.

I explained that I knew of quite a few people who run the Forge 007p without any issues, and that it was a recirculating one rather than atmospheric. But he seemed to think it could loose pressure more easily, and said he has seen a lot of 1.8T where this is the problem.

He isn't the only mechanic to mention this to me. The guy who normally works on my car (closer to where I live) also mentioned this. Now I know the only way to test is to replace it with an OEM Bosch DV (which I am quite happy to do) but I was just wondering if anyone else has been told to replace their Forge or have had any issues?

I don't listen to anything the VW mechanics say, after one told me there was no such thing as 5-30w fully synthetic oil lol and that the turbo from a 2004 Audi TT (Ko3s) wouldn't fit my golf 1.8T lol

im sure forgemotorsport would be glad to hear a garage say that  the sole purpose of forge manufacturing the 007p is as an improvement over the crap o.e.m one (albeit mainly on mapped engines) i know which i would sooner have fitted (and have fitted) 
heres a one for you about garages jonny took his golf in for a stat and lower and upper breather pipes change fair enough but what did we find yesterday whilst fitting a new vac line for his boost gauge well only a broken dipstick guide tube  was split all round and just being held via the clip to the pipe  good job i had a replacement at hand

Think his chatting a bill and ben language, if anything the forge DV is going to be stronger than the standard bosch one as the 007p will hold higher pressure with the upraterd springs it has (I imagine your using  higher spring loads due to remap), can't see it being faulty as its stronger over standard and its a mouse trap mechanism with just a spring, cant imagine it could fail (bosch ones are known to split under higher load). Take the DV apart and have an inspection if you suspect it in anyway, but personally I have never heard of them fail.

Only thing might be ordering is the samco/forge breather/vacuum kits and replacing the silicone if its a boost leak, or ordering independently some silicone and going DIY on the vacuum and breather. That will give you alot of peace of mind as the leaks rarey can be in multiple places or will continue to occur.

Well this is what I thought. I mean, I did my research on the Forge 007p and knew plenty of people on here run them without any issues. Just thought it was odd that two different mechanics from different garages said the same thing.

Anyway, I will wait and see if they come back and say there is a boost leak. Either way, I will run the 007p a little longer.

(NB: I am running the green spring as I am not remapped)

If it is a boost leak, all I can advise if you go diy is this:

1.0metre    x 3mm ID silicone (for DV to FPR)
3.0metre    x 8mm ID silicone (Vacuum side, such as vaccum reervoir and TB, runs mainly at the back near the brake cylinder)
0.5metre    x 19mm ID silicone (this is the size of the breather piping on the top of the Y joint and coming out of the rocker and heading back into the TIP, best buy coupling silicone as its multiple ply stuff, making it stiffer and thick so you should be ok for the next 30years, a right angle joint is handy, unless you plan to put a oil catch can like I did then you will need a metre)
0.5metre    x 25mm ID silicone (DV to outlet pipe which goes to SMIC, get a 90 degree bend to aid you in flexing the tubing as it will cave in)

Oil catch cans also an option if you want it, buts its down to you, you can fit it at the back of the engine bay, on the battery stand or on the plastic cover near the headlight.

Then all you need is jubilees and cable ties, jubilees only useful on the 19mm-25mm stuff as the standard VW clips can be re-used on the 8mm piping, whilst cable ties only needed for the 3mm stuff

Yeah, car is running fine now.

Rough idle has gone (think that was due to the breather pipe you gave me a replacement for) and gets up to temperature nice and quick now and sits bang on 90.

I am just going to run the 007p until the code comes up again and take it form there I think.
