Hi

Just had the head gasket, timing belt etc done on my golg Gti mk3 8v. First thing in a morning when i start my car there is only what i can describe as a slight knock just for a split second the car runs fine, it can do it sometimes 3,4, or 5 times if i turn the engine off in between each try

Once warm it starts ok, then if left to stand for a while it and go to start it again it does it again the slight knock. Any ideas ppl.

Thanks.

Steve

Knocking would suggest a bottom end problem, I would get it checked out asap.

is it yer exhaust knocking on the tunnel....?

my vr did this on start-up after the exhaust was disturbed to fit a decat pipe. I had to budge the middle box over a bit on the hangers and it doesnt do it now.

When i had the head done my mate the mechanic said the bottom end was fine. I think it mite be the exhaust when starting up when cold. When warm it's fine. Had the heat sheild welded up to stop the rattling also. Just hope it was the heat sheild.

If it was the exhaust it would knock most of the time.

the camshaft maybe knocking at start up due to the oil taking its time to pump up round. Try an oil flush and change. Cold weather tends to make this problem worse.

the 8v's are noted to "tappet" where the hydraulic tappets drain down overnight then take a few seconds to re-fill when there is oil pressure.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

my exhaust only knocked on start up, and was quiet when hot, so it wont necessarily knock constantly, mine moved away enough under expansion to stop touching, but clattered like a b!tch off the "prop" tunnel when it ran for the first 10 minutes.

Drove me nuts, so it had to get sorted and its silent now. 'cept for the luvvly noise out of the end lol
