My Fan Stayed On All Night On My Gti Mk3 8v
« on: 01 March 2010, 08:17 »
Hi Again

Ok, either someone drove my car before going to my car this morning or somethings not right lol.

When i went to my car this morning my fan was on. It must have stayed on all night or since 7pm until 8am this morning. What would make the fan stay on all this time. Strange.

Cheers Guys.

Hi mate, I had the same problem on my old gti.
It turned out it was a little black unit that sits under your coolant bottle.
Water had came out the overflow and damaged that and the plug that
goes into it.

Worth checking that for any damage bud.

Found out the water pump might be on it's way out or packed up. The header tank was pushing the coolant out of the over flow due to the engine getting too hot and the water pump not working correctly. Would this cause the fan to come on and stay on longer than usual, except all nite though lol.

If it is staying on then I would suggest a wiring or switch problem.

Hi Drew

I did have a look at it and yeh the water from the over flow from the header tank was pissing water all over it. It's a TW*T to get off or do you have to take the bottle of to get to the top of it. What did you do with your mate to fix the problem. Thanks.

the water from the over flow messedthe unit up, blown the fuse you see at the top but also form the look of it got into the unit and also rusted the plug. . . swaped the unit that only bolts to the coolant bottle by two bolts then had to cut off my plug (yours could be ok) and wire ina new one. fiwed the fan staying on which was got as it used to flatten my battery!

reason for my overflow was the head was on its way out mate....

Good luck with this because mine did this just after all that snow. Turns out the water pump packed in which was caused by the weather and a head gasket gone. Have a look down the black tube which runs over the timing belt cover. I looked at mine a few times on the dipstick and under oil filler cap. Then when I found out what it was and started stripping the head that pipe was full of yellow mayonaise. I had Replaced the fan control unit under the expansion tank, the temp guage and the fan swith on rad befor I found out it was a head gasket too.

Yeh just had new head gasket fitted and timing belt etc. It's just started to do it 2 days ago, i think the water pump is on it's way out as the water is making it's way out of the expansion tank through the overflow onto the switch below. It's not the head gasket so i think the pump as gone or going causing the water to get too hot in the engine and the water pump is not kicking in. Where did you get the new box from with the fuse etc. Thanks.
