Should I buy a Mk3 or Mk4?

A mk 3 GTI will struggle to get 35 mpg. You will be lloking at £80 + per week in fuel and thats if you drive stpidly slowly. If you boot it you are looking at less than 30mpg. 20,000 miles a year you are looking at 3k plus per year in fuel alone. lol The only mk3 that would make sence would be the TDI. Unless you just love mk3 gti's in which case gd on ya they are pretty classic lol I love mine wouldnt change it for anything, but then i only 150 miles a week max

yep costs me £3k a year in fuel alone wi the VR mileage of 25 average, as I do 300 miles a week.

A tdi would cost £1.5k upwards in fuel, but you'll know what you can afford mate, both good cars the mk3 and mk4, i'd like to have an R32 one day, or an A3 3.2 quattro dsg, but if petrol keeps rising at this rate, its gonna have to be a tdi for me again.

Currently driving a borrowed ford ka (which is hateful, but free). I was probably being a bit optimistic when I said that I spend £40 each week on petrol, perhaps closer to £55 looking at bank statements.

lol, I was using my mums Ford Ka before I got my Gti, couldn't stand it! Going back on what I said before I did an 80mile round trip through the lake district today which was a combination of fast A-roads and slow winding B-roads and averaged almost 40mpg (largely due to being stuck behind slow traffic most of the time) So 40mpg isn't unobtainable.

I'm looking at a £1800 mk3 GTI with FSH and 70k on the clock and 2 owners. It's got loads of history and hasn't got a spot of rust,

I got mine last weekend, '97 8v, full VW service history, all old MOT's, 80k miles, 2 owners, £1250. Try to get them down from £1800 a little!

i agree wi flyspeck diesel would be ideal for the amount of driving ur doing gti would be nuts unless u used it as ur weekend car

£1800 is very very expensive! i wouldnt pay more than £1000 for any mk3!

I've just bought a 68k '97 mk3. 2 owners, FVWSH, 3 doors, perfect red bodywork and it goes like sh!te off a shovel! Very happy with the purchase. And as it only cost £1100, I can spare a grand or so for a weekday hack. Still running the ford ka to Lonon and back during the week unfortunately.

Planning a trip to the Nurburgring in the summer now....should blow the cobwebs away. Hopefully, it won't come home on a trailer!
