If your really lashing on the wd40 i guess it could be running down off the engine collecting crud on the way looking like splodges on your driveway..dip your finger in it..what does it smell like?    then you'll know if it's wd or not..
Anyway, i get the feeling your motor just needs a good full service and inspection, with attention to the known problem areas.
Stick with it..

yeh the coils develp cracks in the casing + if the get damp the current shorts aross the crack, you can test by spraying water on the coil, you can see the electricity arcing in the dark apparently.

Well people sh!t does not seem very clever?? Been to a local mechanic and he thinks that the oil is coming from the either the sump or the crank oil seal?? And then he added to the mix that she seems to b leaking water?? He said he wud need to do this that the other lyk a mile long and getting on to £500 +??? and then to add insult to injury he goes oh wey it's an old car it's not worth it???

So I came home crying cos she is my baby and has SERIOUS sentimental value to me?? So I donned the rubber gloves and had a f**k on mysel? The oil pressure switches seemed real loose so tightened them up tightened a few bolts an wot not?? Put a huge bit of White card underneath to see how much drips?? It seems to have lessened but for now I'm goin to hav a sleepless nyt worrying? Wat do I do??heart over head??? Oh my god gutted :((

It's going round in circles a bit with your motor isn't it..seems it was basically running ok.. anyways i think what you need is an unbiased chap into vwdubs to look at it and give you the low down.. maybe someone here could help if they're local enough to you..

Maybe just refresh us on the history of it when your bought it?  any doubts about the mileage..service history etc..
I'll be surprised if it's a serious engine problem on these, unless it's been severely neglected in the past.

Yes you may have an oil leak or and or a water leak as well as some other basic typical problems on these cars but they could be just simple remedies or things that need service attention.. yes there could be other reasons why your sprouting leaks such as head gaskets/pressurising but we're just guessing a bit.. hard to know without more info or a hands on recky..

But, don't give up just yet ok ;)

Had a very similar problem on my vw lupo in the wet. Try starting the car at night and see if you can see sparks from the engine near the distributor/ht leads. The lupo had a clear sparks coming from this area, where it was arcing across. Moisture in the air or any puddle made this 10 times worse and caused stuttering, basically running on 3 cylinders as one cylinder was reciveing no spark. I fixed this poblem by winding electrical tape around where i could see the spark arching across, however a more long term solution would be a replacement part. lol
