Car hates rain?? Helpppp
« on: 26 February 2010, 15:45 »
Back again with naughty gerty (the car) lol.
Mk3 golf gti 8valve r reg

gerty has now decided she doesn't like the rain? This morning she cuts out and refuses to start?? Called aa out and the guy basically said "everything was piss wet" lol. He managed to get her started with wd40?? Sprayed it on leads etc and distributa cap? Suggested that I alter my fan belt as he says it's too slack?? He told me to avoid the water?? Now obviously I can try to avoid big puddles but surface water etc is impossible? He told me that I needed some kind of sealant on the leads an wat not and asked me if I had any vasaline??? I've called the vw garage to see if there is any kind of shield I can buy to stop water getting in but apparantly this can only be had 4 a mk4 an apparantly I'll have no chance modifiyin it to fit gerty?? So I'm a bit stuck and would appreciate any suggestions or if you've had the same probs wat did you do?? Cos it's not practical to not use her in the rain it's my only car or  riding around with wd40 an having to f**k on all the time???

Please help!???

there was one for the mk3 but everyones seems to have fallen off, dont think all came with though, there should be a small one under the pas belt, try scrap yards ect.

should be a cover for PAS belt

iv also got full engine undercover tray on mine like the  mk 4, the mk3 diesel comes with this standard, but they cost a couple of hundred at the dealer so best bet is try find one on a car been broken, mine is mint and i payed a FIVER for it!!! then bought new bolts to hold it in place at the dealer for a few pence

It's a bit odd that your leads and dizzy cap are getting so wet.. I've been through endless rain and big puddles with no misfire or cutting out..nor do i have to lash on wd40, although that's a good measure generally during winter time once or twice perhaps.
Is your front grill/bonnet standard or badly fitted?  maybe rain and moisture is getting through somewhere and being forced onto the top of the engine as your driving along..
Anyway if you suspect the leads and cap then best replace them.
As for the belts so long as they're not old/worn i think you'll find if tensioned correctly they wont slip,  my pas belt used to slip sometimes after going through a puddle but it just needed re tensioning and no more slip.

Check coil for cracks.
Golf MK3 1.8 auto and I didn't pay a grand for the "priveledge", auto windows all round and a AC. Oh and I've got a luggage net you pricks!

Does that make my willy look bigger?

best way is next time it starts to cut out when wet get your wd40 and spray the cap, leads, coil and other electric connections (if its still rough running)... Do this 1 at a time and leave it a minute between items and you should notice spraying the knackered one makes it run better...and simply replace that part
you don't need to seal the leads with vaseline if they unbroken as they should be shielded but any splits will absorb the moisture in the air when wet

oh and all my golfs have had a line of mud etc under the bonnet after rain (have a look on the underside of the bonnet after rain (gearbox side))

check the wires to the crank sensor, mine are bare near the sensor where the insulation has perished+ when wet mine cuts out
