Ess, originals were 195/50/15, right? I'm sure VW know what's the best for their cars...

Just like with the suspension set-up?
Oh yeah, VW know best.

Most who've tried both will agree the GTI is sharper on 195s.

You mean the suspension is crap in general, or the height is too high? If it's the second, then as you know, they have to keep in mind all the sh!t on the roads, like humps, potholes, etc.

Well, anyway I'm not saying 195/50/15 is the "wrong" size to go for. And some GTI's have 195/50/15 rubber as original, don't they?

By the way, what would you say about 195/50/15 vs 195/45/15 ?

Here's my 40mm lowered Gti on 195/50/15's if it's any help, the fuel filler flap says 205/50/15's for this model, which is what it came on. It does feel less heavy on the steering with them compared to the 205's, and my road tyres are 195/45/16's. It does nt lack grip so I would nt worry about it. (And as has been said, they are much cheaper )

And here with balloon spec 205/50/16s :embarassed:

195/45's I think are too small for a mk3.

195/50/15 is the perfect size.

I have toyo T1R all round in that size and it grips very well, better than what it used to grip on the 205/50/15.

Also 195/50 rubber is FAR cheaper than 205/50 and 195/45.

Crap in general. Too high, under-sprung and woefully under-damped.
Strange that they can get it right on Mk5/Mk6 GTIs without the off-road stance...and still keep it pothole safe.

Early GTIs were 195/50/15. My 1993 8v was for sure.

I'd still take 195/50/15 over 195/45/15 as the latter look even more lost in the arches, and the 50s just drive fine...so why go to 45s?

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

I was thinking to get 16" Borbet A's, but now seem to change my mind to BMW's E30 15" BBS's with 195/50/15 tyres.

Hmmmmmm....

Be carefull with the offset, some Bmw rims are too low for a Golf.
