Wheel swap - MGZR 16"
« on: 24 February 2010, 21:17 »
Has anyone done this swap? I've got an early mk3 4x100 fit, so was told the wheels would swap straight over, makes sense right? I grabbed a set cheap with good tyres, so was super chuffed. Went to fit them and a couple of issues -

In the centre of the wheel there is a small ridge which makes it fractionally too small to slip onto the hub. I was thinking about grinding it flat, but the prospect of fcking the wheel up is intimidating.

Me golfs also 60mm down and it looks like the wheel will knock on the shocks. So fit some spacers right? But it looks if the wheels move out the arch will cut into the tyres....

any ideas would be gratefully recieved

You need to get the center bore machined out, doing it yourself with a grinder will cause issues, what size are the tyres as they should be nowhere near the shocks.

My advise Mate is to get some proper VW 4 x 100 pcd wheels. These will not sit properly and will cause problems in the end.      Cheers       Deano

the tyres on the front are 205 / 50's. The wheels currently on there are a set of 14" scabby RH 5 spokes which are 195's.

Yeah I kept looking for vw wheels, but haven't got the money for brand new ones and I thought it would be cool to go for something a bit different, to the standard BBS route.

Its literally fractions of a mm out - I know getting it bored out is the better route, but it looks to be about a 5min job to get it flattened down. I was looking at the RH's and they don't have the same ridge inside - just smooth, so can't figure out what it's there for.

The center bore is to locate the wheel onto the hub, most cars are different sizes, VW is smallish but you need to get it machined really.

Got the fronts on fine - no rubbing at all which is cool. Went to get the backs on and I got rubbing on the shock. I'm using spacers anyway, but by my calculations I'm gonna need 60mm overall widening as with twenties each side its still touching. It only has a cheap sports kit on it so the cup is quite fat. If I switch to coilovers will this give much more room?

Also read back what I wrote it sounds like I'm grinding off the hub lip, which i'm not. I'm just flatting out the lip in the middle of the wheel hole

Same thing it needs machining to ensure the wheel locates onto the hub, otherwise your only holding the wheels on qith the bolts.

30mm is loads and i'm sure it will push them way through the arches, so then they need flaring and what not. Thats why i'm wondering on getting a set of coilovers and taking the cup kit off. Where its rubbing is the bottom of where the spring sits in - so by swapping for skinnier rear shocks should give it more clearance?

Its one of those things - I was looking for wheels for ages and didn't wanna spend out on a new set due to money issues. I saw these were the right PCD and managed to get the wheels with pirellis with loads of tread on for £100.
