Bodywork protective plastic film

This is part of a message I posted in the "August orders and list" thread but probably not many would see it there, so here it is again.

Anybody used any of this or know where I can get the clear plastic film for bodywork protection? The sort of stuff that would normally be used to cover large areas like the whole front or bumpers etc; but I only want some small pieces I can cut to size and shape myself to put on the lower part of wings behind the wheels. Tried extensive web searching but only seem to be able to find full kits.

If you're prepared to cut it yourself, have you thought about the rolls of self-adhesive film you can buy to cover books in? It's very cheap and you could give it a try to see what it looks like...

I bough a sheet of 3M stuff off ebay, think it was about £25 for a fair sized piece, aint cheap so if you are just looking to `play`, go with Frogs idea, the proper stuff is so sticky its supposed to stay on for many years.

Have you tried using the 3M material yet - if so how does it look?
Not too bothered about the cost as long as it's durable, stays in place and not too visible against the background colour.
Other alternative [If I knew where to get some] would be small corner protectors, like the top section of a mud flap but slimmer and without the "rubber flipper".

Not used mine yet, pick up the car tomorrow afternoon 
I got mine to cut pieces for the door sills and the top of the bumper where the boot is.
Planning on cutting the shape out in paper, then using it as a template - hopefully I wont screw it up.

The 3M stuff is supposed to be the best from what I`ve heard, resists going yellow, and is intended to stay on for years, so hopefully it will be all good...dunno when I`ll get to use it with all this crappy weather tho.

    I had a Racing Puma a few years back and that had clear film fitted to the bottom off the rear quarters. I had it replaced by the dealer before I picked the car up, and if I remember it wasn't very expensive. Might be worth trying them. The pieces were about 300mm x 250mm IIRC.

I think VentureShield do sections, but thats just from memory of reading in some car mag.

I had DefendAll protection film on most of the impact areas of my last car, and it worked a treat. In 5 years, there was not a single stonechip where the film was applied.
The film could be polished with decent detailing products and you'd struggle to tell it apart from the unprotected paint...but if you weren't careful when polishing you'd get a line of polish at the edge of the film.

Once on though, it didn't move, didn't yellow (I don't think...it was on a yellow car!) and just worked.

I think it is a 3M film Defendall use.
