Arch Rolling
« on: 24 February 2010, 01:06 »
Getting myself a set of D90's 8J wide all round and also lowering the car 60mm all round on coilies.
Just wondering to what extent will the arches need to be rolled (if at all?) and is it a hammer it yourself jobby or will i need to pull in the professionals? :(

I look forward to your replies :)
Many thanks, Jon

In similar dilemma, found this is as low (on what i think are 9j and 8j) as you can for using everyday, no arch work has been done at all but something needs doing to the rear wheels. It does scrape on bumps evry now and then. on coilies, not sure exactly how low around 65/70mm. 195/45/16.

mmmm, not sure if you would need arch work at 60mm.... depending on the offset i would say the wheels are going to be out the arches and so on hard cornering the tyres will probs scrub. if they do, then just remove the plastic trim and using an arch roller, slightly roll out the arch. too much and you will need to get them sorted and sprayed again as the paint can crack. I would be very wary though as there is a chance the paint will crack and the arches will begin to rust (thats if they arent already rusted under the plastic trim).

The best way if you want to keep your car is good condition would be to get a bodyshop to do all the work. I think kells went down this route, so ask him for pricing, etc..

i just rolled mine myself, still need to come out a little more and need a little work to tidy them up, but i wont bother with it until i get it (if ever) resprayed.

yo

first up, the ones in the pic dont look 9j or even 8j as no stretch on the rubber, i could be wrong but thats how it looks

mine are all 8j, the car did catch on the front passenger side, on the rivets which held the GTI arches on, the car was dropped about 60mm at that point and i could go no lower, could be down to the brand of rubber you use, im curently running yokohama.

my mate owns his own bodyshop with a propper roller etc, what we did was use an electric saw to trim off the lip on the gti arches, including the rivets etc, this means you have to bond them back on, ill come back to this in a sec

next job we rolled the fook out of the metal and remove the brackets for the rivets which hold on the gti arches, i did mine more than what you would normally as i wanted to drop my car on its ass, some paint did crack a little but we sealed this with sealer, this is a must!!!!!   even if you dont see any cracks seal them, i did this part myself and i used almost half of tin of the stiff.

gotta be carefull on the fronts as they are very thin unlike the rears which are doublt ply metal, on the front if you pull them out too much the gaps between the door and wing will be all out to cock

to bond the GTI arches back on we used this bouble sided bonding tape which all bodyshops use (i dont know the name but its strong) we did a run of this right round the edge of the trim to stop any water been able to get in, we also used what looked like tiger seal (black gell stuff)

we left it to set

i then wound the coilovers right down and bob is now your auntys uncle, no rubbing, LOADS of clearance and i can throw it intio corners at speed with 4 people in the car and have no issues, its great, well happy with the job

Yep its what happened to mine :) i rolled mine as far as my mates homemade roller would go, the front arches starting loosing there shape so could go anymore. I want to get some mint front arches and try them again, but the rears are fine. They do need a little more too.

I believe my coilies only drop to a max of 65mm so 60 should be perfect for me :)
Looking to get toyo proxies all round since i have found them to be a reliable budget performance tyre!
Pzero neros are too pricey for me but they are flipping awesome!

Thank you for all the valuable information! I definitly wont attack it myself then :D

By the way kells... your car looks beautiful! I LOVE IT!
