GTI mod ?
« on: 23 February 2010, 13:01 »
Hi this is my first post so sorry if it sounds stupid.

I’ve got a 58 plate manual GTI and I was wondering what I can do power wise without voiding the warranty. Also would like to ask if I have to get it serviced by a VW dealership while it is still under warranty as some people have told me I don’t.

thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Well, pretty much anything you do power wise will void your warrenty as its been changed by you, not them. Obviously if you have a remap and your lights stop working or your windows stop working your ok as the remap has clearly not effect it. But if you have a remap and your engine blows up (this real worse case / end of the world scenarios here) then it would be void. Like wise if you start adding induction kits or anything thats going to put more load on the engine, it in will invalidate the engine side of your warranty. You warranty must be ending some time this year so I would just hold fire for now.

You can find dealers that are mod happy (RedRobin got his VW dealer to map his car) but this is a VERY rare thing to find. I waited till my warranty finished till I risked playing with a car thats worth quite a bit of money. By all mean crack on with cosmetic mods if you want to.

As for the service, Im not 100% sure. I had mine serviced at VW under warranty because I wanted some dealer stamps. VW can now shove their service prices were the sun dont shine and I take to a good local independent VAG specialist. Being a 58 plate I would take it to VW for now (for sell on reasons, not service).

Thanks for the info, is it a 2 year warranty then?

What did you do to your golf if you don’t mind me asking as I don’t live that far from you and could use some of the people you have

lol - Maths = fail ! my bad, I obviously cant multi task. Its a 3 year warranty.

Ive had:

R-Tech Remap (direct from R-Tech via mobile service) - http://www.r-techpower.co.uk/index.php
CarbonSpeed air intake (Tuning Werks South Croydon fitted as part of a service) - http://www.tuningwerkes.co.uk/index.html
Forge DV (Tuning Werks South Croydon fitted as part of a service) - http://www.tuningwerkes.co.uk/index.html
Full turbo back Milltek Exhaust (bought off a member on here who had a mate he knows in a garage fit it) - N/A
BBS LMs (supplied and fitted by R-Tec, not the same as the remap people but a VERY similar name, based in St.Albans) - http://www.rtecshop.com/
Sub and Amp install (parts supplied by me and fitted by Ultimate Audio in West Wickham, Kent) - http://www.ultimate-audio.co.uk/flashsite/

The guys I use are Tuning Werks in South Croydon. I've had some cosmetic work done (got a carbon front grille and he repaired my headlight, dents and scratches) which he added after I had a, shall we say, bit of a coming together. He also does my MOTs and service.

Where are you based?

I got my remap done with 6 months left on warranty as I just couldn't wait any longer and all the rest apart from the audio was done after my warranty expired.

Once you start its a downward spiral from there :D

Im currently only running the Stage1 Remap which doesnt take into account the air intake (which tbh is by far NOT the best one in terms of gains, but it looks nice and does a bit. The other induction kits, like the impressive Forge TwinTake one - http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/content.asp?inc=product&cat=&product=FMIND12, require a lot more work to fit and you have to have the engine cover off) and the full turbo back exhaust. It ran 242bhp and 265 lb/ft on the rolling road. With a Stage2 map id expect to see around 260bhp.

Im currently on a driving ban so have not been able to get back to R-Tech for them to have a play, I get my license back in the summer so will be up there to see what extra gains I can get :D

Good to have a fellow South Londoner on here ;)
