Mine never used to, then it decided it would for about 6 months, now it does not again.

I dont know about the internal mechanism, but not being able to get your key into the boot lock and turn it is a common problem due to the design of the rear of the car - all the rain and gunk cloggs it up nicely.

Can you hear it trying to move when you turn the key?

Do you mean it dosnt lock on the central locking or it doesn't lock when you use the key?

You will probably find the mechanism and or the lock is full of crap,i had this problem a while ago,i removed the lock and took it all apart, cleaned it up and then refitted it and all is fine now, just remember how it comes apart as there is lots of small bits inside the lock including a tiny ball bearing that is more than easy to loose, also check all the hoses from the central locking pump are all fitted propery
(this is in the boot) and that the solenoid that operates the boot lock is working correctly.
