Not sure if yours is the same but I bought some new top mounts for my mk2 when i got my coillies (hot tuning, don't ask) but the mounts had a spring retaining cup built into them that i couldn't remove so i never used them, are yours like that? If so its possible that you have 2 retaining cups at the top of the shock, 1 built into the coillies and one built into the topmount, this would cause you to sit a bit high at the front and would also explain the lack of thread coming through the turret top. It looks like it isn't even tightened down onto the nylock bit of the nut which is very dangerous.

Yeah, I think those are the puppies. Bought them as they were "Especially suitable for lowered or uprated suspension as these have a harder compound of rubber as compared to a standard", ah well you live and learn. WIll order some new ones. Get it sorted over weekend.

hayescappa cheers for the pics, where did you get your top mounts from??

erm, all MK2 top mounts are like that, thats the way they are designed! there is no extra spring plate built into oem MK2 top mounts, ever. they all use a separate spring top mount, which is black, #8 in my suspension pic above.
Look at the pic, it even shows that metal dish on the base of the top mount

Ok I'm confused now and can't see the pics as I'm at work. I've bought and fitted G60 topmounts, the febi bilstein ones off the 'bay. They do have the metal bits on one side like the ones in the JimR link. I have got a picture of all that was fitted as I did a before and after. Will post it up when I get back home but working late tonight, and no that isn't a euphemism,  unfortunately...

Ok so this was what was fitted minus the wee extra rear top mounts

So should I have fitted those G60 topmounts?

Any suggestions gratefully recieved...

I see you have 2 nuts on your front struts as shown above, you shouldn't have fitted the lower one (if you did), the original VW notched nut should have be fitted instead to hold on the rubber mount, maybe this is causing the bodder, I got my top mounts from GSF.  Hope you sort it the weekend, I also noticed you have dust covers on your ones, I got mine from Venom FK's but no dust covers came with them.  Should I have got these?

Feck knows

I'm total coilover/suspension virgin, hence the bollox up

Erm, imagine dust covers will keep the, er, dust out?

Will check out the 2x nut hypothesis. Got a mate of a mate with a beast of a lock up which he said he'd lend me this weekend= win

Plus I don't have the vw notched nut, dunno if that's a major factor or not. Hoping it'll be a simple fix.... FLW

could be if you used the nut included in the kit to secure the top mount it didnt fit inside the hole in the top mount properly, thius could explain why its all gone rather funny. the slotted nut fits inside the hole in the middle of the top mount neatly so the retaining cup and upper nut fit snugly together with the top mount

undo top nut, remove retaining cup and look at the top mount, you shouldn't have a random nut bodged in there. of course if the nut was fitted under the top mount you'll have to whip shocks off again to check!

Yes the phrase "you're doing it wrong!!", has been banded about the garage quite alot recently...
However the car is now not starting at all and made me late for work today  Suspecting a dicky starter motor/ solenoid but will investigate further when I get time tonight.
