Oil Spec in GTI Mk6
« on: 14 February 2010, 12:40 »
What is the correct specification/grade of engine oil for our Mk 6's please?

My brain is now fogged with the bewlidering array of numbers associated with viscosity and diesel engines and high performance and blah blah blah. It used to be SO easy.

Looking for the correct grade of Mobil 1 to top up after my first 4000 miles in the car. The manual obviously quotes a VW "ripoff" part number which doesn't identify the oil spec to stop punters using their initiative and buying from a petrol station or Halfords etc.

Is it 0W-30, 5W-30, 15W-50 etc etc. and is synthetic teh best way to go? Magnatec, Mobil 1, Helix....... what are people using?

Fully Synthetic 5W30 was used in the Mk 5 GTi.
I presume the same oil may be used in the Mk 6 GTi engine.

Just chnge the oil filter and added 4.7litre of 5-30w Castrol Edge. Hopefully, my range with a full tank of v-power will improved to 320miles+!

The higher octane fuels seem to give smoother running. Supposed to also result in cleaner engines.
Maybe it is my imagination. But hey, might as well give the engine all the help it can get.

Thought 95 RON was recommended for the Mk6?

Oil-wise, anything approved to VW504.00. There are nearly 60 to choose from but here are some more common ones:

Castrol EDGE 5W30
Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W30
Mobil 1 ESP 5W30
Quantum Longlife III 5W30
Fuchs Titan GT1 Longlife III 5W30
Golf R

High ron fuel vs normal fuel was tested in the past by Fifth Gear and Evo megazine. It does give a few more ponies to high revving cars such as M5 and turbocharged cars such as the Golf GTI. It does not give you any additional bhp for cars with normal aspirated engine. It also contain cleaning agent which can minimise carbon deposits baking on the pistons. This had been discussed in other forum relating to cars with direct injection like ours!
This is the only way to inc. BHP of your Golf GTI without upsetting your insurance company or invalidating your warranty!
