Buying spec advice
« on: 14 February 2010, 11:37 »
On the lookout for the following:
  • Black
  • 3 Doors
  • Manual box
  • Leather seats
  • 17" Monzas
  • <80k miles

I know im being picky! but i have about 2-3 months to find one.

A car with both those seats and wheels is what bumps up the rarity.
If in my position, and after a few months nothing turns up would you either:

a)Continue to wait

or

b)If I manage to find one with the 18" monzas which seem more common, buy it and swap them / ebay them in exchange for some 17".

Also what do you think a good price for the bullet point spec would be, 10K?

10k seems to be the very bottom but i think for a car with 80k miles it would be about right. there are dealer aproved GTI's with far less miles with 17's and leather but are a bit more money. theres one on VW for £12.5k with the spec you want but 5 door and at only 36000 miles. its always good to have warranty so i would rather pay a bit more and get it from a VW dealer personally. good luck with the hunt! if you can streth the budget quiet a bit i would recommend an ED30 for around 15 grand you can get a good one

Most people go for the 18" over the 17"'s .... whats the reson for your preference?  There are probably many on this forum (me included) who would happily swap their 17's for your 18's if its that big an issue.  The 17's don't go for that much on ebay either so you could pick some up relatively cheap.

............& me + the standard interlargos cloth suits the car better than full leather.

I quite like the look too, but ive noticed in lots of pictures on autotrader that the bolster next to the door on the upright portion of the cloth seats always seems bent and frayed.

This was a problem on the mk2 aswell - as people would get in, they would rest their weight against it.

.........can be a problem BUT then again the VW leather is not the best quality & does suffer wear + it's not all ''real'' leather & contains some vinyl.
