I get confused seeing pictures of so many modded and un-molested cars. Are all the front and rear badges supposed to be chrome colour or are some black depending on year and colour ? I am particularly interested in how my 90 spec Royal Blue should look.

I am sure someone will correct me, but I thought all mk2 GTI's had the standard chrome/silver VW badges on the rear, but black ones on the front grill.  Something to do with setting the model apart from lesser models in the same way that they have a red stripe around the grill.

The 'GTI' badges are obviously silver front and back though.

According to Vagcat & Etka

The Chrome Rears are listed a special... So I guess for GTi Models Etc...

The Black fronts are shown with the GTi Grille...

But My Lad has a Run out Mk2 Driver - thats totally Orginal and it has a Chrome front & Grey Rear.... Dunno if it's just polished up that way over the years...

My 1991 8v GTi Runout has a Black Front & Rear But I have a chrome one to fit to the rear.

My 1988 8v Has Chrome rear and Black front.

The Golf GTi badge on the back are different... One joins at the top and the other at the bottom.

Ok, I think I understand now! Mine has at the moment a black VW and a chrome GTI badge on the front, and a chrome VW and black Golf GTI badge on the rear. So I guess the only thing non standard is the black GTI badge on rear?
