New Golf Gti Owner - 1996 Golf Gti, Dark blue - Exec
« on: 13 February 2010, 19:15 »
Good Day

I have very recently come into the possession of a GTi! and man am I excited.
I tend to think that I know a lot about cars. as in I can spot and name cars from a distance. recall specs and performance figures. Know the basic working of an engine, gear box, and generally know whats going on under the bonnet of a car.
I have however had NO practical experience. I do have a :mechanical mind" and take stuff apart at every opportunity.
I tend to like to do things myself and learn in the process rather than handing things over to other s to do for me and end up unsatisfied.

I also like "one of a kind" concept. Where "My" Gti is like none other in the world, however I do want to keep the original shape and style of the car. I do like things original.

Now my first question is regarding the engine.. According to Wikipedia and my understanding there of, the Golf MK3 Gti came out standard with a 2.0l 16V engine starting in 1996. Is this true? If so how do I tell if mine is? it has no special markings of which I can see. The engine also doesn't "fill" the space under the bonnet as I have seen in many pictures and friends cars. As a starting point I have looked at the engine number and it begins with AFW000xxx

Second question. Is there any "first things to do when you get a 14 Year Old Gti" guides around? I have done a standard service which included filters, oil.. the usuals

I look forward to your replies and to growing my knowledge through the forum and hopefully as a by-product refining my car in the process

The Golf Mark 3 GTi came out in the 8valve form as well Mate. By the sounds of yours not filling the engine bay this sounds more like an 8 valve but could not be sure. Try uploading some pics up and we can tell you. Also started way before 1994 Mate      Welcome to the site though Mate.      Deano
