FLUCTUATING IDLE - 8V GOLF GTI DIGI
« on: 31 July 2003, 08:09 »
since having the car serviced after buying it through a local mag,  the car came back with the idle problem, fluctuating between 900-1800rpm, when i rang the garage back the mechanic told me that who ever had the car before hand had set the (if i can remember rightly?) mixture screw (and maybe something else) in order to counteract the fluctuation in revs, but this made the car want to stall once started in the mornings and when the engine warmed up it seemed to staedy the revs (although at times it still wanted to stall?), so he set the car to the mixture to what it should be and as a result the car now suffers with rev fluctuation? the car has come with a full serive history and when i looked through the receipts i noticed that the car has been in a few imes for this rev problem? a good amount of bits connected to this problem have been bought from VAG dealers but for some reason never fixed ??? ???I took the car to a injection specialist and he said without booking the car in to have a look at he could not tell me too much apart from the golf does suffer with an idle problem.  This would mean stupid amount per hour which i could not afford! but he did say that before i did anything with the idle, he noticed that the car was misfiring due to a damaged lead, and he believed that that would not help the cause?  any help would be greatly appreciated ;)

Seems a common problem, I had it, mine was a lot more severe than yours, would rev up to 3000 sometimes, then when trying to pull away would drop to around 500 and not be able to move, anyway, I was told to clean the ISV which is a silver looking thing above the rocker cover, so did that, also removed the idle screw, cleaned the black gunk off, that might fix yours. Checked all my hoses for air leaks too.

It didn't fix mine, so I unplugged the temp sensor, (blue one), that controls part of the ECU and I don't have the problem anymore.

Granted the second option isn't really a true fix, but hey, anything's better than getting up half an hour early in the morning to compensate for problems whilst trying to drive to work!

Let us all know if you solve it!

There are loads of threads about this, have a good look thro the forum, basically you need to clean the idle stabalisation valve(i think this is what it is called) this is on the air inlet near to the idle adjustment screw, unscrew this fully clean the inside carefully and replace the screw. This should clear the problem.

A quick fix would be to unscrew this screw slightly, but the problem will return.
