VR6 - loss of power
« on: 30 July 2003, 19:23 »
Hi chaps,

I have had my VR6 for 4 weeks now and it is nowhere near as quick as it should be. I have put a full scorpion exhaust on it, ram air induction kit and a cat by-pass pipe.
The car pulls well through the gears, there are no engine noises, smoke or mis-fires but it just lacks that 'umph' that a VR6 should have, it's like i'm driving with the hand brake on.
Anybody experienced this?
Any help would be much appreciated as the car is begining to cost me a lot of money.
Cheers
Tom  :'(

I had the car put on the diagnostic machine and it didn't show up any defects.
The mechanic checked the emissions and didn't report anything out of the ordinary so i presume they are ok.
The car is really starting to get on my t#ts now though, i've had nothing but trouble with it since i bought it.

i dont Know but  does the ECU need reseting ?

Rolling road tune is the only way to realise the full potential of the engine + mods.

Was the car better before you made the mods? this would point to state of tune.

I'm not taking the p**s, but are you driving with the hand brake on? What I mean is are the brakes / hand brake releasing properly? You'd be suprised how much power is lost at the wheels by faulty brakes. Some dyno tuners even remove the pads on the driven wheels whilst dynoing. Worth checking.

None of the brakes are binding at all (first thing i checked).
Before the mods were done the car was running worse. I took it to a specialist where the diagnostic machine detected a faulty air mass sensor along with a few other things. I decided to get these sorted and at the same time get the mods done. When i picked the car up it was running better but still nowhere near the vr6's capability. The mechanic suggested that a chip would solve these problems because the card would now be underfueling due to the mods. I really don't want to spend another penny on the car without being certain that it will sort out this problem.
Basically i am just wandering if this is common with VR6's. As i said before the enigine itself seems 100% and the car has been well looked after.

If all the basic things are OK, then I would start looking deeper. Has the head been off, ar the cams timed correctly. I once fitted "competition" cams in a AAA engine and it lost power ???, refitted the factory cams and all was well, Steve.
