You just have to remind yourself WHY the valve was there in the first place..

A couple of people have had their legs scalded in the last few years. I heard one guy was giving someone a passenger lap on a track day when his went!

I get worried bout this aswell, but I only ever do small journeys and I think my thermostat is stuck open so I hope mine doesnt go when I finally get orund to doing it lol.

For the sake of 20 quid I will end up buying a mk3 matrix and spend hours shouting and screaming like an angry homer simpson trying to fit it

the Heat would not be a cause of the blow.
The Matrix End tanks would blow , no doubt through age of matrix and or increase pressure on the track day when it happend inthe story.

Nearly every car I have owned either has a flap or leaver type matrix, flap type , coolant is flowed through the matrix at all times and the air flap direct the heat over the core when you want heat.

leaver type will only flow coolant through the matrix when you set it to hot, not one of them have ever had a bypass like the golf very strange.

From what I was told by a Dub Mechanic they put the valve in after a number of LHD cars had problems spraying hot coolant all over the drivers legs.

They put them in most MK2 when they were serviced at some point... At a VW Garage.. As An Upgrade..

Hence how you know the matrix has blown when the passenger footwell is soaking wet and stinks of coolant!!!

Yep it was a re-call, think it was a wiki article that said it was because a guy in America got burns from a matrix popping in a jetta years ago. Might not be why they issued a re-call but never the less, kinda puts me off bodging it with copper.

You can still get the bypass valves from scrappies but they could well be shagged and some people do sell them on the internet but a couple I saw on ebay bagged as new were fetching at least double what VW used to sell them for.

The guy I speak to at GSF in leicester (who happens to have a MK2 GTI ) advised I fit a MK3 matrix cus they only cost like 20/25 quid

GSF do 2 types of Mk2 Matrix's... I Think.. a good one and a crap one... I bought the good one for £30.00 from GSF with discount...

I also got their hoses... Bottle of G12 for £30.00, have kept the old VW ones just in case and will get some copper pipe just in case, as a back up!!

I now have a toasty Heater! Whoop!

popped to B&Q and got a 22mm copper connector , took out the bypass, put the copper pipe in, blocked the little bypass pipe with a bolt and a hose clamp and fired up , let it warm up and its lurrrvly and warm - Result!
