8v GTI Gearbox change
« on: 08 February 2010, 21:26 »
So my gearbox sounds like someone emptied a bag of marbles into it, changed the oil, the thrust bearing and the push rod, still no change so I'm gathering its twitted!!
Found a gearbox for £75 but was wondering how difficult it is to change i.e
Is it pretty much bolt off, bolt on?
Can it be done with the car on axle stands?
Is there a good way of cleaning the new box out before installation, without stripping it all down?

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers in advance.

Gearboxes are usually bolt on bolt off. I helped remove a MK4 1.6 box and there was various bolts all around it, two driveshafts out and the rod. The engine mounts came off and moving the engine down and moving P/S pipes it came out.

I can't see it being too different.
Golf MK3 1.8 auto and I didn't pay a grand for the "priveledge", auto windows all round and a AC. Oh and I've got a luggage net you pricks!

Does that make my willy look bigger?

Oh yeah it's called Helda or something....

Simple as!   Put it on stands, usual thing, drive shafts of the hubs,  un bolt the shafts from the box, disconnect the front lighting loom etc... pull the front valance off (comes off with the radiator, bumper etc.. all in one)  then you can disconnect the gear linkages, wiring etc.. and then just the bell housing bolts,  wiggle it off...
10 golfs and counting!

Engine cranes = the ultimate tool to test the tensile strength of Everything you didn't disconnect!

I did mine last night, i found the easiest way was to actually remove the pass side driveshaft as it gave much more room when trying to put the box back in...

from memory its...

1.driveshafts are a small spline tool not a torx/allen
2.clutch inspection cover is 2 15mm bolts
3.starter motor connects to front engine mount, that has to come out 2x17mm i think
4.but on the starter motor bolt is a 13mm nut that holds a plastic wire cover which comes off first
5.rear engine mount is a single bolt on top(19mm) and 3x13mm bolts on side of i think its the diff housing
6.2x19mm bolts on top end of box, although one has a 13mm nut on it for earth strap
7.1x19mm bolt at the back underneath block side near the diff housing for o/s driveshaft.
8.speedo switch and another switch i dunno what it is
9.release clutch cable by jacking up the clutch arm slightly and pulling off the metal locating washer
10.Cabling for the starter motor needs to come off

I think thats it...

A few points though, make sure you put on the securing strap for the clutch cable before you remove it. The rear mount has a single bolt that bolts internally on the rear mount, if your mount is f**ked the bolt will turn and you will have a cnut of a job getting it off...

It took me 6hrs30 to replace the clutch last night.. nightmare mission.... good luck...

Another tip, when removing the box, if you rotate it so the diff faces upwards, it will give you alot more room to get it out.
Also do the job with someone helping you, its very difficult on your own.

Hi
I know you posted this a while ago but im just wondering if you did a step by step novice guide on taking out gearbox/replacing gearbox. I have a old mk3 gti with a gearbox problem but to take it to specialist i need to remove it to take it to them. Im no mechanic but pretty handy was it easy or a pain to do?
