Why dont you try to do somthing special with it? Rather than just an engine re-build? Get inspired by B-class rally vids and make some mad turbo 4wd 1000bhp jobbie?

I fear, however, as the engine is intended for the group leader's day to day car he may not take to that, although, it is used for road rallies so we can but try, as long as we tell him what we're doing
thats a 16v block of some kind, check for 1.8 or 2.0 cast into the block round the back, that'll tell you what it is
