Turbo charging an '84 gti 8v
« on: 02 November 2004, 11:53 »
Hi newbie here. Had my golf about a month and i'm looking to turbo charge it. As far as i can see i could use the larger of the two turbos from my mangled rx7. Then i've got to mod the manifold to take the turbo. Get an oil feed to the turbo. Put in a thicker gasket and to lower the compression and put in up rated bolts. Then strap the turbo on. Run low boost bobs your auntie! Or am i completly wrong? I dont really wanna F*** it so soon! Any one know any one whos done it and can help?

plus a load of piping, an intercooler, remapped ecu, and uprated everything else on the car to handle the extra power (brakes/suspension etc).. bloody expensive thing to do to an old mk2, as much as an engine conversion at least unless its in show condition ?

i've often wondered how hard this would be to do with a turbo diesel manifold. i'm sure you could kill a high mileage engine quite quickly. also if it was that easy you'd have probably seen alot more of those type of conversions going around.

not saying it couldn't be done, i'd like to know myself, but it may just be a cost factor, like topher said, its probably easier and cheaper to do a transplant. let us know if you have a crack at it though....

yeah because my mates are the mechanically minded ones who said it'd be easy but i was thinking the same. If it is easy why dont more do it? Which does mean it's prob not. As for all the other bits brakes and suspensions done i've got 4 intercoolers layin about of an rx7, pulsar , 200sx and r34 gtr skline(prob be a bit ott!). Jus the ecu i'd have to do. As for the car it will be show condition very soon hence i wanted the engine to go with it. I think i may phone some dub tuners see what they say. Thanx tho guys.

you wont be able to do anything to the ecu cos 84 8v's are k jet and contact breaker ignition, you will be able to change the ingnition at the most
