DSG question

Just wondering if anyone has had the same experience as me with their DSG box.

Took delivery of my gorgeous 3-door candy white GTi DSG on 1st Sept last year. I absolutely love but I have one niggling issue and wanted to check whether anyone else has noticed it too. When sitting in very slow moving or stop-start traffic (and the car is fully warmed up), the DSG drops into 1st and almost feels like it 'disengages' the clutch. This is fine but when you go to set off again, the car seems to jump back into gear with a jolt. This is OK the first few times but after 5 or 10 minutes in traffic it begins to feel really jerky and is very annoying! I'm not sure if its the tuning of the engine or that this is simply the way it works. I've asked some of my mates with auto boxes (OK, so one of them has a Aston DB9!) and none of them experience this when the car is stopping and starting in traffic.

Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I don't do traffic jams much, but I've certainly never noticed this.

I was build week 35, took delivery 17th September.

its an ironic coinsidense that the car was delivered one day after the last recall model build date..I'd get it checked out.

I've owned my DSG GTi for about 3 months now, and I've noticed the clutch does indeed feels like it disengages when you're crawling slowly in traffic (10-20kph)
My question is, do you drive in manual mode or in automatic (D) in heavy-traffic conditions?
When you're in manual mode, I've noticed the car jumps down to 1st gear in crawling traffic,
and when you're not gentle with the throttle, the car jolts as the clutch engages again.
But when you're in automatic mode, the car stays in D2 (second gear) most of the time, and while the clutch feels like it is still disengaged, the pick up when you press the throttle is much more gentle.
I hope this helps I usually drive in manual mode, but when I'm in stop-start, crawling traffic, I leave it in D as it is much smoother.

to be gentle and give it some time for it to make up its mind!

Is it that noticeable that you have to give it some time to make up its mind on roundabouts?
Surely this would be dangerous if the car is hesitating on the middle of a roundabout?

Why dont you go to a local dealers and ask to drive another 1 and see if its the same and if it is get it checked .

Agreed, however to be fair it is useful to have the views of others to back up your case.


As for me I can't say I've noticed anything seriously out of order. Yes DSG is not perfect and can be a little sluggish at times, but I put that down to being in D. If I am in manual I find it smoother in slow traffic, esp when going over speedbumps as I like to hold a higher gear rather than dropping down one.

Yes it is that noticeable. It happens quite rarely but when it does it takes a couple of seconds (which seems like ages when you're trying to exit a roundabout!) for the clutch to engage. I don't know why this happens thou. It's not like I'm indecisive with the throttle, nor am I a lead- foot. But other than that, my DSG experience has been absolutely fantastic!
